who's to blame?

My friend, lets call her Alex, was recently out and was hanging out with this boy,lets call him mike,and he saw a girl who Alex had never met before. Alex muttered something under her breath along the lines of your ugly and the next thing you know Alex and the other girl are getting in to a fight.
Who's really to blame for the fight legally or just in opinion?
Would it be wrong of me not to pick Alex's side even though I'm her friend?

I would agree that Alex started the fight. She should have controlled herself. To be frustrated by jealousy is human nature but it tells of lack of self control to begin a fight. however its not the question of who began the fight but how to resolve it. if females don't get along its a sign of mental illness to me.

yeah both of the girls have issues and yeah i thought it was alex's fault too. hopefully she'll learn from it.
