I've seen it a few times, yet it still leaves me in awe when it happens. Today, one of the more senior guys in our department was let go. I'm definitely sure that this was not a 'recession-thing', but more of a 'butting-heads' thing. We just got a new VP for our department, and he has started re-structuring our group. A few weeks ago, he relieved the manager which I reported to with his responsibilities. Now, he's just one of us. And today, he let one guy go. Of course this guy was the sort of guy that sticks his head out all the time. He voices his opinion when needed. I wanted to be like him, but I just can't afford it with the current job outlook. Now, we have mixed feelings about the situation. The VP has just asked us not to talk about it. We don't know how to act. I think I'll continue to lay low, and hold on to my job for as long as I could. Have you ever been in this situation? How did it make you feel?

You make me feel grateful I never got a job where, how did that saying go," I get dressed in my Sunday best to sit behind a desk." I wouldn't make it .I would have so much bottled up anger that I would have either jumped out of the window Years ago or gone postal! You are doing the right thing, talking about it. Vent here! who are we going to tell? Good luck with the new management. If you ever need to Really vent, I mean with those 4 letter words I Love to use, send m a private message.

Thanks Sarah! You're right! MyLot has become my avenue to vent. I guess that by writing it down and broadcasting it on the internet, has helped ease of some steam for me. You mentioned in one of my discussions that you're a retired violinist. That must have been a sweet gig! Makes me wonder why I gave up on my piano lessons as a kid. I should start looking for other opportunities. I just know that this place where I work would make me go postal if I stay here long!

I played mostly for fun . I was in a quartet for a while and we got paid but I had more fun when I played for fun , Not money. All I can tell you is follow your bliss! Sit down and figure out what you Want to do and go for it. Question. is there another company where you would like to work?Or is there a talent you use at work now that you can use to branch out on your own?

I've never been fired but I've been laid off once. And I've laid people off. Once somebody who worked for me was fired, but my manager wouldn't let me be there because the VP wanted to be there for it (as if it was a spectator event or something).

Funny you should say that it's a spectator sport. I had to fire somebody once, and the materials director wanted to be there to see it. It was already uncomfortable firing somebody, and he made it worse so. I guess I was the one being judge then. She wanted to see if I could do it. I did it...cool as a cucumber.

my boyfriend is in this situation previously. He has to keep quiet all the time even though his officer is demanding and unreasonable most of the time. at least he can keep his job. He said he was suffering then as this job he is in is not his passion. He has no choice but to continue as there is a contract that bond him to the job. Now he has just submit his resignation during the "early release" period as mentioned in the contract, he is "free" to "fire" out and up if his officer is unreasonable, at least that is what he told me. He does not feel obliged to stay nice and obedient any longer. After all, he don't have to worry about keep his job now that he is leaving. I can only say, good luck to you! Stay tolerant if you need to!

Yup, it was hard for him.. now it is better as he has confirmed that his last day is in July. He wish to, but he thinks that he will tell the officer off only when that officer steps on his toes for no reason at all... Otherwise, he would be deemed unreasonable... Even if he is leaving the company, he wants to leave with good reputation behind. You are welcome!

It must have been very difficult for your boyfriend to keep everything inside. I guess being tied up in a contract is not so good. Good thing that there are provisions in his contact for early release. May he should tell his officet off! That'll teach him a lesson. Thanks for the response.

hi bounce yes indeed and was let go simply because the second in command did not cotton to senior citizens namely older women working in her library now she was not the boss, but the boss let herself be pushed to let me go on the excuse I was almost eighty,on the other hand she said I w as on of the best workers she had, yet she also said she had to let me go, and i asked bluntly if the second in command had asked this of her, and got now answer.well now headquarters of the library chain did not appreciate what those two women did, so they fired both of them for firing me with the only excuse that I was almost 80. I was asked to come back but by this time I had had a bad fall, had had to have surgery and a shoulder joint replacement so was unable to return and would not have anyway as I was heartsick at the way I was treated even if I had been whole again.sometimes younger men get into command positions and the first thing they do is fire all the older people which I think really stinks if you want my candid opinion.

Hi Hatley, Just another example on how people discriminate on age. Even at these modern times, there are still people that do. I don't get why library work would require younger people. I hope you've gotten over it. And that myLot keeps your mind busy!

here in our place, people are seldom fired but they resign most of the time due to low pay. Most of the time the requirement of the job does not match the pay the employers give. More effort is needed but there is lower salary.

Hello sharlionse. Are you still there? What are you waiting for? You should start looking for other prospects if the pay isn't good enough. Goodluck to you. Thanks for the response.

well, I already had a previous experience of being fired here in the Philippines, most of the people I worked for have no regrets of creating stories against me so that's the reason why I got fired on the job by my boss and it's embarasing and humiliating experience very very sad experience to say the least.

Hello Joseph! I hope you've gotten over that experience. And that you've found another job where people did not make up stories about other people. Thanks for responding.
