Hehe! The great argue between Europeans and Americans! It's called football not soccer!
In my opinion, American Football, it has to be called just rugby whilst European is the true football..
I mean come on.. you kick the ball with your feet!!!That's why you call it football!

Yeah it is true that football is used to denote that we hit the ball with the foot and it is true that the game is called football in other parts of the world while in America it is known as soccer..The american football is indeed the rugby..howver what's there in a name..a rose will remain a rose and give that same essence even if it is called by any other name..the same principal applies in the case of football or soccer..it requires no language to describe the emotion and the fan following that the game enjoys all around the globe..so my friend it relly doesn't matter whether the game is known as football or soccer as both the name reflects the same game and enjoys the same popularity.

I agree, but it's annoying to say football to someone and that someone will understand rugby instead... Or say football and the guy will understand soccer..

Of course! I was just curious to ask "why" by the time I never lived at the States :)

:-) There are no language rules when a term is referred to a sport action: what about volleyball? Handball suits better for a sport that uses only the hands, but it already exists for another sport.

The funny thing about American Football is that it is not played by the foot and neither is it played with a ball. Instead it is played with an Oval!! That is I agree that football is beautiful game that they prefer to call soccer. Anyhow such discussions will go on and on.
Cheers!

Hi valkerion,
Americans always want to win everything. And if they can not win it, they will create the similar games with different rules and regulations.
Since they does not like the pain of playing rugby and not good enough to be in par with best football team in the world, they create a new game similar to rugby but called it American football. They insist to call it football because it is the most popular game in the whole planet.
It really weird to call a game as football when 99% of the time played, the player used their hand. They should call it handball instead. It is so weird to think that genius people like Americans can not differentiate between foot and hand .

Oh well I am not so sure about that! We call things differently because we are on separate countries. The fact that U.S. did this with another word is understandable. What is not, is who the hell first did call rugby as football? :P

Hi val, you have a good point there. Rugby does not entail playing the ball with the foot. Soccer does. But the Americans enjoy the game and they want to call it football. So let them be. I heard one time David Letterman musing in his show that the Europeans covering the games said the score was 1 - nil. And he doesn't know what nil was. Well, I believe the Americans tend to believe that they must know everything. If they call it zero, then the whole world must call it zero. But nil is okay and we know that. Just let the Americans have their fun. It's not hurting Europeans, is it? After all, it is the game that matters.

i can understand your point. the football here in the states doesn't require much kicking. the only kicking involved is when a player is going to kick a field goal after a touchdown. like in most other countries football here in the states is the most popular sport although its played differently when compared to the rest of the world.
