I thought of this today as i know my grandmother who is in her eighties still likes to handwrite letters that she will send to us from time to time so it made me wonder how many people still do. with the popularity of the internet and e-mail and all of that it seems that not many still write letters we may get the cards at christmas, but that is not the same as a handwritten letter. I will admit i am one of those that does the e-mail thing i was never really big into writing letters and my handwriting is not the greatest either. I seem to have more online then offline friends anymore so it seems to be the simpler thing for me to do and not to mention a whole lot faster then the regular mail. so the question is do you still write letters? if you do how often do you write people?

hi tim! at this day and age... yes, handwritten letters will become obsolete fast as more and more youngsters and adults alike rely on technology that makes writing tasks more efficient and produce faster results. i think city dwellers will do less and less handwritten letters. but in more rural areas where technology hasn't reached its full blast, i think there would still be more handwritten letters being exchanged. my sister's boss is a very dedicated letter writer (handwritten) and does about 20-50 letters a day to the nuns, priests, seminarians, friends and family. she's really amazing. it's her passion and hobby. in my family, my mom still writes a few letters every now and then. my eldest sister does the same. although we do more on emails, we still do cards and attach letters to it on important occasions. i can't remember the last time i really write a long letter (handwritten) to anyone outside of the family. hehehe although i am like the post-it girl who likes leaving short messages to people (family, friends, and associates).

it makes better sense to communicate online than via snail mail. hehe i wouldn't want to go back to those times it took forever to reach people by ordinary mail system. hehehe i do know that friend. lol did she tell you that someone sent her way too many messages, it filled up her mobile inbox to the brim? and how crazy it was to keep up with the messages that flooded her way... lol

yeah i wonder who it was that sent so many messages i certainly do not know them lol. maybe it was just taking to long to get a reply back and they ended up writing more then they had planned to. it is usually easier to do the email since most of my friends are online that i communicate with and its so much faster to send something to them.

that is nice that your sister's boss does that. that is good that someone in your family does that it does seem we are pretty reliant on our technology for our communication these days. With the amount of time i spend online it is pretty easy for me to just send an email opposed to write a letter just for the ability to get it to someone fast and with a letter it can take days to get there. I do know a friend that was without their computer and was communicating just with their phone mostly and they had to charge it multiple times in a day so that must of been a lot of fun.

Much of my correspondence is business related which is not sent hand-written. I email with friends and family but there are times where a letter is most effective.

well most of mine is with my friends not so much with the family and any business related is handled with the email and since most of my friends are online that is the easiest way to contact or connect with them that or chatting which i don't do a lot but i do some of the time.

95% of my friends are online friends so I use emails. Like you my handwriting is really bad. Before I was online I would write my nephew. I wrote him a letter and he seemed to like it so I kept it up. But now I email him.

yeah i am the same where most of my friends that i deal with on a daily basis on online friends and my regular hanging out friends we don't really write each other, since we see each other or talk most of the time. yeah i do like how what i type looks when the computer printer prints it better then how it looks when i write so if i do send a letter to my relatives that don't have a computer i will print it over writing it so it is much easier on them to try and read it.

Him Timhinyy. Yes. I still write letters. I currently live in a different country than the rest of my family and I've gotten into the habit of writing them each about once per month. The development of email is great however, to me, it's "cold". When I write I think it adds a more personal touch, you know? Sometimes I'll spray the paper with something that smells good, a perfume or something. I'll send little "goodies" in the letters too. Things that aren't too heavy or bulky. My parents really seem to enjoy getting the handwritten letters for the same reason that I like to write them. Not only for the personal touch, but it also keeps my writing skills sharp. Too much typing and my penmanship will go downhill! lol. I think writing by hand is becoming a dying form much as the ancient scribes carved things into stone. It's a shame really. I will send ecards for the major holidays such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc. but I also send handwritten ones. I mostly send the ecards just in case my handwritten ones don't reach their destination in time. Especially around the holidays, things have a tendency to get "misplaced" by the postal service! lol.

that is good that you do that we don't have a big family or extended family so not as many to keep in touch with. I suppose i might write letters more often if i was better at it then i am, because i am very critical of myself when it comes to writing and i just don't think of myself as a very good writer so in that way if i am communicating and mostly that is with friends i don't see family online too often. I guess if you are going to take the time to write a letter you might as well have a little fun with it too.

It's really just my parents and brother that I write to. You know, you might get better at it if you do it every once in a while. "Practice makes perfect" or so they say. lol. It's interesting that none of my family is very active online. Funny thing is, we've all got web cams! lol. Personally, I don't like them much because the picture is always a little "jerky" and the mouth and voice are never in sync. That's probably why I stick to the letter writing and emailing.

very rarely! maybe once-twice per year, which is really nothing, but the most of my "letters" are in e-format, emails :) sometimes I really feel the need to write a letter and send it to my relatives, just to make them feel happy and important, because one letter, one real letter can really makes someone who receive it feels the happiest person on Earth, because the letter, written by the hand and the pen, contains something more than just a message like the emails or the txt messages that we send from computer and mobile phones. it contains love, feelings and something special that the other two don't- it contains personality!

as far as i go i have never thought of myself as much of a writer so sitting down and writing a letter is not a lot of fun for me even though i know that my grandma loves to get them so we try to send her a letter even now and then just so she knows we still care, because she does not have a computer so an email is not an option for communicating with her and my other grandma also does not have a computer so it would seem that sending them a letter would make more sense, but no one seems to take the time to do it anymore.

phoenix it's great that you do send, and I totally agree with you, a real letter expresses more than text message, but feelings too :) What can I say, I love to write letters :)

To be quite honest after the internet has made it way into my life I do not think I can really recollect when was the last time I really wrote a letter but I sure do get letter from my daughter who studies in a hostel and wait like hell for it to arrive. Her school do not allow them to use the internet for emailing and they are supposed to write a letter every week. I would like to admit that a letter does have that personal touch but I do not think an email will ever have that.

i think to give an email that personal touch as you said you have to make it as you would a letter, since it is the easier way to connect with family and certainly the cheaper way. there are a lot of different touches that you can add to any email be it a background of a type of writing it would look nice and fancy if you put it in italics like they have on yahoo mail. it is nice to know some people do still write letters even if they are made to do it.

I agree with avani26 and unfortunately have to disagree with timhinyy, an email will never have the personal feeling of a letter, you can add any images and stuff like that, it will never be the same. I remember when I was a kid my father was sending me letters, I felt his emotion in his handwriting, that can never be achieved with an emails. Especially if the letter is written in the Japanese style with the paint brush, that in my opinion is the greatest way you can express yourself with text, you actually have to take lessons for it and make an effort, that really adds allot to the personal feeling it have, and not to mentions how beautiful it looks ! But of course they're only for special occasions, it's not a effective way to communicate now a days :)

I still write letters, mainly to my family. Many of them do not have a computer, and letters are a lifeline to them

Handwritten letters are obsolete. We all need to admit that. Technology has its benefits and the biggest thing about Internet is that it gave a far better alternative to all media of remote communication and social interaction. It created a peaceful revolution that almost everybody embraced. There is still something valuable in writing letters but the advantage of sending an email surpasses all advantages handwritten communication could provide. Many things that were popular 50 years ago have been obsolete since the quick development in technology started: imagine still listening a tape or watching a mute film in black and white!

yeah i actually saw a silent film on the television last night it is strange watching a movie without sound. it seems to me emails are just easier and faster for most people and i will usually send an email if i want to write one of my friends, especially if i have seen them in a few days just to say hi and see how they are doing that kind of a thing. it seems everyone is in such a rush these days and no one takes the time anymore and this is a big contributor to the post office not making money anymore with the prices of stamps continuing to rise most people will take the less expensive alternative which is the email.

As far as I am concerned, I think I seldon use the letters now. I just use my computer or cell phone to communicate with my family or my friends. I think this is very conveniet for us .For the letters, I think several years ago, I may use the letters to communicate with others.

well i certainly would use the email for everyday type of communication as most of my friends are online quite often. The only people in my family that don't have a computer are a couple of my older relatives so they would be the ones i would write to if i did, but probably wouldn't be till i wasn't going to see them for a long time.

Sometimes I do, it's a better way for me to express myself with calligraphy, to make it more personal on special occasions, I've taken lessons of calligraphy for Japanese when I was younger, and I can use what I know for roman letters too, but I really prefer Japanese because I find it more expressive with the kanji symbols, you can actually see what it is in a simplified image for example this character ???, you can see in it 3 trees one near another and it means forest, so when combined with calligraphy it really is an art form, and of course I write mails with the paint brush not normal pencil. But of course I use email for normal stuff...

i could see that would be a lot of fun to write a letter like that with all the symbols wish i knew more about what all of them were. I have always wanted to learn more about other languages and that would be a great way to learn about them.

I don't write letters anymore because i used to receive and send mails through emails or electronic mail. But i'd like to have one. It's been a long time since i receive a letter, i mean a real letter that is written on a paper. [laugh] But seriously, i appreciate people who still write letter/s on a paper.

yeah no one sends me letters except for emails so i wouldn't know what to do with one. I think it would be nice to receive one, but i don't know if I'd have enough time to sit down and write one out. If i would write a letter i think i would do it on the computer first then print it then send it to whoever i was writing too.

yeah with the computer and people being online so often we seem to have forgotten about writing regular letters anymore, but its not because people don't care its just that we are always so busy and just don't have the time. I always hated my handwriting so when i send letters i will do them with the computer printer so they are easier to read.

yeah my handwriting is the same way if i need to write out something even if it isn't a letter and it is just something like a list or something like that i will use the computer to print it up so it is readable, because my handwriting is pretty bad unless i just print my letters.

yes a love letter would be pretty nice and it is a nice way to be romantic too. I would like one day to write a whole poem i can do a few lines, but never a whole one where it makes sense that would be fun to try. I always like to get mail when its not a bill, but with being online as much as i am email is just a more convenient way to correspond for me.

hi friend !! strictly speaking ,handwrite letters are obsolete nowadays.with latest technology ,even one can use internet in mobile phones to get connected with his near and dear within seconds.I was writing letters to my parents while i was in school 15 years ago.But nowadays my cell phone is doing all the job.Anyways, thanx for sharing.

yeah i would say with the internet and the cell phones most people are chatting or texting or emailing and just don't think to or take the time to write out a letter anymore since everyone is so busy doing things. We are all about doing things quickly anymore and no one either has the time or takes the time anymore.

I dont really anymore (I used to alot when I was younger) because email and cyber chats are cheaper (free!!!), easier (dont have to go anywhere and typing flows easier than writing and you dont have to worry aout handwriting neatness), faster (zip and its gone already in the person's inbox). Only problem is I find that it's making people lose their obs because as th post dwindles as does the need for postal workers. Post cards are great too, but I usually buy thema nd hand deliver them to avoid cost and work while Im travelling or vacationing,.

yeah not to mention you have this great thing in some of the browsers called a spell checker that helps you notice when you misspell something too it comes in pretty handy here too. yeah it is a shame about postal workers losing their jobs, but with the prices of stamps continuing to go up and up they are making it pretty hard to make it worth sending any letters other then our bills. my handwriting isn't the greatest either especially my cursive ooh is that bad, but i try just not great at it. the computer prints out so much nicer then i do.
