One niece and two rings left...

It was probably in the early 90's, R says to me, we should pick up some earrings or something and keep them for the nieces until their 16th birthdays. So I went shopping. Dawns love to go shopping. But earrings of the sort I was looking for, in the price range I was looking for, were very hard to find. So I started buying up rings. Gemstone rings, semi precious, mostly ranging from about $70 to $100. He looked at me funny when I showed him some. "I thought I said earrings." Yup, you did, but try and find them. Rings are easier.
So every time a niece had a 16th birthday (they were ALL nieces until later - nephews get watches, purchased not so far ahead), we'd haul out the rings. R would look at them and say, "I thought we got earrings". lol Then the birthday niece would pick the one she wanted. The last two were the nieces in Spokane, and I couldn't get up there, so we had to do it long distance. I sent pictures, they chose, I mailed the ring.
I just mailed the garnet ring to my niece Alex (Alexandra). Out of the entire collection, which consisted of (if my memory is right) a garnet, an amethyst, an aquamarine, a pearl, a citrine, a peridot and three blue topazes, there are now only two rings left. And one niece. I bought an extra so the last niece would have a choice, never thinking that the two remaining rings would end up being the same stone (different shapes, different settings).
Dilemma dilemma dilemma...
Go and pick up another ring so she at least has another color choice, or just let her pick from the two we already have. I can always save the two that are left for my daughters.
But anyway, how time has flown from when they were babies to when all but one of them have already turned 16 and gotten their rings. The oldest one has a baby herself.
Am I getting old?

Are you old?
Compared with your daughters, you are old (but NOT in personality, humour, etc).
Compared with me, you are young (in every sense).
Age is nothing but a number!
I would not think of buying anything so far in advance, but I like the idea. Even though I like the idea, I don't think I'll do it for my granddaughters. I'll wait until the occasion arises.

We'll see. I might pick a third one up with a different stone. maybe not. I've got almost 2 years to think about it!

Hi Dawn, we all are getting old. :) It is more fun at this end though. :) No fear of losing one more tooth, or one more strand of hair getting grey. :)
My life's been quite bad and this is the best phase I seem to be having!!! As if it matters. :)
That "I thought we got earrings" is the kind of thing I go through regularly with my papa! :) I have little choice but to keep quiet, and wish he'd been to his dentist before that meeting. :)

That's a great idea to buy things like that and keep them for when nieces and nephews grow up. If I started that now, hopefully by the time they get to 16, rings and watches would still be common fashion.
I wonder if they'd want nose rings by then? Then it could be unisex!![](/Content/images/emotes/lol.gif)

Maybe older, not necessarily old. I think you are very thoughtful. Rings were probably a better bet. Not everyone wears earrings. What a terrific aunt you are. I would yes, get another ring, give the choice, and save the other two for the daughters and this will then be a "cousin" thing.

I think I'm going to sneaky like see if she likes blue a LOT and if the answer is 'not necessarily', I'll pick up another ring. I have 2 more years to work it out anyway!

Hi dawnald,
Rings are good, you can't go wrong with them, you can let your niece choose fro the two. Whe my neice and nephew was young I used to buy them Cherry Drops sweets but they are nearly 40, shall buy them a packet each? lol! I think I will including ofcouse their other presents.

Nope, but the upside is that they can do whatever they want with it!
