A jogger from Georgia was killed a few days ago while jogging. He was running on a South Carolina beach listening to his IPOD whe he was killed by a single engine plane who was making an emergency landing. Isn't this just horrible? That is why I seriously don't think the IPODs are safe. You could be running in a park too and listening to your music and not hear someone sneak up behind you and grab you. I just don't think its wise to use them while your alone in a public place. This story is just so tragic.

I agree! Their is a good chance that if he didn't have the iPod on he would have heard the plane coming and therefore could have gotten out of the way in time. That is the same things with cell phones especially the ones that yack while driving. I always just let my cell phone ring until I got to where I was going. It's not worth risking my and my children's life just to see what was so important when they can call back or I can call them back as most cell phones have call display! Their was a law passed in our province (here in Canada) as of January 1st this year that you are not allowed to talk or text on a cell while operating a vehicle otherwise their is a hefty fine and I say it's about time. Do you know how many times I have almost been in an accident or seen someone else almost cause one because they were on their dang cell phone? ... Too many!

That they are! Unfortunately some people have to learn their lessons the hard way so maybe one day the havoc that they cause will catch up with them!

I know when you are driving, you look to the left they are on the phone you look to the right they are on the phone. Then the person in front of you is on the phone. Its just to much stuff going on and people are not paying attention. They are all in their own little world causing havoc all around.

I agree we shouldn't heighten the possible danger around us by being only partially aware of our surroundings. This guy probably didn't think he was in any kind of danger as he was jogging on a beach. It might be possible though that he have avoided the plane if he didn't have the iPod on. He could still have been hurt, but at least alive. The smallest things could save your life. This, by the way, is really a pointless way to die.

It's the same for walkmans and cell phones and a lot of things though. I don't think people are going to give them up just on the off chance that a plane might decide to land where they're walking. I agree it's really sad though.

I agree dawnald! Cell phones are horrible things when put in the wrong hands. Especially because the person is so distracted ... for that very reason the province recently passed a law that you are not allowed to operate a vehicle while using a cell phone (talking or texting) otherwise their is a pretty hefty fine!

No I don't think they are going to give them up either. However people who are alone in a public place should be more careful not only when it comes to planes. People in general. Criminals love to find someone distracted by a phone, ipod or walkman. They are then caught off guard and then bad things happen.

OMG! You don't seem to be understanding the point. If he was running on the beach without the ipod he would be alive today. He would have heard something from the plane that would have made him look behind him and run for cover.

OMG if he wasn't listening to music he would have realized what was happening and been able to get out of the way. I don't understand this its like common sense.

The person's not blind. If the plane was coming on the opposite direction he could have seen it. Chances are the plane was coming from behind. Besides, i don't think it's right to say not to wear an ipod in public because that's the main purpose of the unit, so people can enjoy listening to music without bothering other people. Freak accidents happen with or without an ipod on. I certainly would not stop wearing an ipod for fear of some freak accident. No one is safe in a freak accident. An example of which happened here in my country when a plane drop from the sky and hit a house killing all people inside, i bet not all of them are wearing an ipod.

The plane would have hit him regardless of weather or not he was listening to anything. From the direction it was flying and based on where it landed, he could have easily been hurt regardless. While this is tragic.... one good thing came out of it. Only one person lost their life when it could have been easily hundereds or thousands on that beach.

I don't agree at all. He would have heard something and looked and would have gotten out of the way in time. Thankfully it was only one person but that too would have been avoided if he wasn't listening to his IPOD.

In certain places it can be dangerous. In some it may not, either way you have to be safe with your ears when using Headphones

I read this online today, but I didn't know he was listening to his IPOD. Whew. I was thinking, how come he didn't hear it approach or see it fall in the air.

well that is probably not because he was using an IPOD as much as it was a freak accident if a plane is making an emergency landing and you happen to be in the way you wouldn't have much time to react to that anyway.
If you are running and you can't see a plane coming that is probably another problem other then you aren't paying attention.
I mean even a small plane should be big enough and loud enough that you would notice it if it were anywhere near you.
It probably happened so fast that the runner didn't have any time to react to it, it was probably just a case of wrong place at the wrong time and more of a tragic accident more then because they were listening to the IPOD.

Sorry but I would have to disagree with you. It had everything to do with he IPOD. If he didn't have the IPOD on he would have heard the plane having trouble. He would have looked in the direction of the plane and been able to get out of the way. I'm sure the plane had to be behind him while he was running on the beach while listening to his music and not hearing the plane.

Well i don't know so much about this matter. But i would like to say that use headphone with high volume it's not good for ear. Very bad for health.
That's why we should avoid it.

i just imagine how loud you would of had to of had that to not hear a plane and just the unluckiness to be right where the plane had to come down, but a good reason not to go running with one anything that takes away from being able to be aware of one's surroundings is never a good thing.

Thank you for posting this, lelin1123! I don't have an ipod but I never did consider them being dangerous in any way. This is so awful! I guess people need to be more careful when using them. I hope this will make some of the mylotters who own ipods think. Kathy.

i agree so that any music player while you are traveling you should minimize the sound of your music or any other gadgets to here what is happening in your environment every seconds of your life traveling so good luck to all of us...

The sound should be down not just for what could happen around us but also to save our ears so we don't end up deaf at an early age.

You never expect a plane to fall from the sky and hit you, but it is good practice to keep your ipod low enough to hear what is going on around you, just as a safty measure.

I totally agree with you! Keep it low enough also so you don't end up deaf in ten years.

lelin1123,
I think as you have read and gathered that this is indeed a freak accident and IPOD or none of it, that jogger could just have been killed or if not seriously injured.
I do not know but if you have read the account, the plane's propeller just stopped during mid flight and the plane just glided down with both the pilot and passenger in apparent shock.
There's just no way the deceased jogger would have heard other than some change of wind swoops. I shall want to blame the plane maintenance and probably a little bit of pilot negligent pre-flight check here.
I do agree with the hazards of having walkman or IPOD at full blast when one is in the outdoors especially on the roads but this is one who is literally merely jogging on the beach where the last thing you and I would expect is to have a non functional plane perform an emergency landing behind. Lest we have eyes behind our backs, this freak accident is just unavoidable and not one for the asking.
Have a nice day.

gosh smashed by an incoming airplane! now that is something really aweful, i guess even if he wasn't listening to his Ipod he would not have had the time to save himself, at the start few lines i thought someone was going to get killed by some auto vehicle but an airplane emergency landing! that is just so sad, yeah people should be careful walking on road with earphones attached to their ears, ipods are lot safer if used at home, and even someone is jogging with it on, they should try to avoid places where there is traffic, i have seen one more case where people walk on the road busy text messaging, but anyways i am getting out of topic, well ipods when used we should be aware that it is deafening us from the outside world and we need to take care where we are using them, gosh an emergency landing plane! poor guy..

He must have turned on the volume, or he must have heard a PLANE coming.
I don't advocate using music players while you're on the move, it's not safe. Now and then, there are teenagers killed by cars while listening to music and crossing the road. Yes, the story is tragic, but I don't think you should blame entirely the jogger. Who would have expected a plane falling down from the sky?
