Hi MyLotters.
Today I want to talk about a useful tip I'm using since long time ago to detect viruses on my flash drive.
Let me start with an introduction. A powerful and usual way of spreading viruses is removable disks, particularly flash disks, nowadays. A malicious program could infect your PC mainly through internet or network, and removable media like a CD or flash disk. Therefore most of the viruses will infect flash disks when connected. In almost all the cases they make an autorun file (autorun.inf) which has hidden and system attributes not to be visible for normal users. In this file it will tell your PC to run a special program immediately after connecting the flash disk in order to infect the PC.
Here is the point. You can do several tasks within the autorun file which running a program and changing the icon of removable media (CD or flash disk) are more important among them. You can simply open your notepad. in the first line type: [autorun]
in the second line type: ICON=icon.ico
save the file with the name: autorun.inf (not autorun.inf.txt!)
copy this file to your flash disk together with an icon file with the name: icon.ico
After removing and reconnecting the flash disk you will see that icon as your flash disk icon.
If you connect the flash disk to an infected PC, it will immediately change this autorun so that you will not see that icon any more. OK, now you know that you can not trust your flash disk. Clean it first or ask some expert to do it for you.
I hope it was useful for you.
