Do spider plants sometimes replant themselves to self-propogate? Why no babies?

Good morning~ I have a spider plant. I know sometimes, spiders grow babies you can pot. This plant is doing okay; I have it by a window and am actually watering it fairly regularly now. (Gee, what a concept!) For some reason, though, whenever I've had spiders, I've had some babies but not always. It seems I don't always get babies. This plant I have now, I've had it for some time; and it has no babies. However, it looks as if it may have separated or replanted itself to self-propogate. I looked in the pot today, and it looks as though there are actually three plants in there. I guess there are different kinds of spiders. I'm not sure what kind this is. But it has no babies. And it looks like there might be three plants in the pot now. Do they self-propogate? Why don't I have babies? Does it depend on the kind of spider you have, or does it depend on how you care for it? Is it normal to expect you'd have to separate them sometimes? Let me know whatever you know about spider plants! Thanks so much! Hope it's a gorgeous day wherever you are as it is here in NJ! God bless!

I was reading some of the other responses and do know that mine are all over. The roots are coming out of the drain holes. I was going to tell you to wait for a more mature plant.

Thanks, Sallyj! You mean I'll have babies when the plant grows up more? We'll see. I have to take it down from where it's hanging. I think it has reproduced itself. I may have to repot the others. I never knew that babies only came, though, when the plant was overgrown. I always thought it was a good thing when there were babies. But maybe you don't necessarily want the plant to get to that point either. You have lots of babies? Are you going to plant them? Thanks for your reply!

Thanks, SallyJ! I wonder how you get so many spider babies! I rarely get them! Enjoy! :)

I have two major spider plants. One is plan leaved the other is varigated. I have planted some of the spiders from the varigated for freins, but have also thrown away some because I just don't know whaat to do with all of them.

I find that spider plants don't usually throw babies until they are root bound. Meaning it looks like the pot is too small & no room for the root growth so Mother Nature has the plant produce babies on long stems to put a new plant a foot or so away from the original. And yes, spider plants do tend to send up new shoots sometimes so it seems there are more plants in the pot than you started with.

Wow! Great explanation, thanks! I had no idea! So, if my spiders have babies, they probably need to be repotted (besides having the babies cut and planted). I didn't know that! That's great! Thanks very much! Happy Spring!
