My computer's uploading like crazy!

I don't know what happened, but suddenly the upload rates are hitting three digits in my PC! The moment I connect to the internet (the wireless) it starts uploading something or the other. Yes, it a virus - for i found the firewall disabled as well. And great help is the updated Kaspersky I'm keeping!
Has anyone experienced this? I had to connect to the wireless terminal to be able to access internet (the uploading was cutting off my downloading - not a page was loading!)
This is the weirdest virus ever! And wherever did it come from?

Sounds like you need to do a virus scan, and make sure it's also catching tracking cookies. If you need free anti-virus, avg is pretty good. Make sure you run the scan noy just have it on auto protect because when that happened to me my antivirus was working but it only got rid of the virus on a scan. Also maybe you need to go into internet options and increase security?

For a start, don't run more than one anti-virus/anti-malware/ant-etc. program at the same time. They will all fight each other and your pc will grind to a halt.
Most anti-virus programs have a scheduled time to scan your computer. Often by default it is mid-day. If the scan is interrupted by turning off the pc then, by default, it starts the next time the pc is switched on.
If other programs with a different scheduled time are also interrupted they will also start when the pc is switched on. Many will try to update themselves and fight to download big files.
The net result is that you switch on your pc and all hell lets loose as several programs all compete for control of your machine.
Personally, I turn off all automatic updates and scans and manually set them in motion, one after the other, at the end of my working day. Hopefully, I will start the new day with a clean pc.
I would also go to Run msconfig open the Start tab and disable all the programs there. Then re-boot and see if anything does not work. You will also find your pc will work much quicker and you may find that it is not thrashing the hard drive so much.
If you see no worthwhile change then go back and run msconfigStart and activate all the programs again. You will have lost nothing by trying this out.

Thanks for the tip. I have already deactivated a large number of programs at startup and services in msconfig. Updating anti-virus and Microsoft security updates are crucial, so i often let those be. i shall deactivate them all and see what happens. However, my system runs very fast, and that is not an issue. I'm trying o isolate the program that is updating like crazy and eating up my bandwidth.
Thanks anyway, it was a useful idea.

i had no idea. but how can hackers make us download their files? the updates are automatic and from ms site.
well, vista had caused my DVD writer to not work and the speakers to become mute, but the XP has yet to do any harm on my PC. but I'll take your advice and turn off automatic updates. thanks.

I use CIS. Something similar happened to me. Using CIS seet at the maximum secyrity level I knew the culprit, ByWifi Video Accelerator. After having it blocked, the problem disappeared. Even before this ByWifi was uploading and downloading something No, it was not updating. I suspected it because several times it requested permission to receive a connection from the Internet, from various countries.

During boot up, press f8 then select safe mode, run combofix and wait to finish it. Also give it a try to restore your system. I hope this can help to solve your problem.

1. Virus scan
2. Use Spybot - Search and Destroy (free and a good defence against Malware) from here:

I came from some idiot that had nothing better to do than futz with other people's lives. I compare the making of computer virus's to medical labs that develop killer bugs just so they can figure out how to cure them. Neither one makes much sense to me.

i think before you reformat your computer you must scan it with Combofix. combofix is a very powerful registry fixer and virus detector. try to download it it's free. then after combo fix done fixing the registry try to restore your computer. thats the other alternative. but if the problem still there you have no choice but to reformat your computer.
