How long do you wait before deciding the "best response" to your discussion?

Whenever I start a discussion, I try to pick a "best response" although sometimes it's very difficult as there are several people who always write really good comments. I have sometimes picked a "best response" after a couple of days, only to find lots more comments a day later. Up to now it hasn't mattered because those that I have chosen have remained the "best", in my opinion. I can see a day, though, when I have chosen a "best response" only to have a brilliant one come in later. How long do YOU wait? Does it really matter if you pick the wrong one? I'm always thrilled when I get a "best response" but I'm fairly new to myLot so maybe it doesn't matter so much to other people.

to be honest I usually don't bother about choosing a best response as I don't really see the best response as anything other than a gimmick he he he
I only ever give a best response if its an amazing response and that happens quite rarely that I think one stands out massively from the rest.

To be honest not really lol,
I replied on this subject on another discussion getting a best response makes no difference at all to me if I am being perfectly honest, some people love getting them but I makes no odd's to me.
If getting a best response earned you a bonus then yeah I would be more inclined to actually worry about getting best responses.
I answer the discussion like I am now honestly and truthfully, if that warrants a best response then fine but in my mind all my responses are the best I can give.
So in my own mind I already have given the best response I can.

I think because I'm relatively new to myLot I'm taking the whole thing far too seriously! I need to lighten up a bit and be more like you, Benny!

I generally wait until I get an answer or response that is helpful in meeting the criteria of the discussion that I started. If none has been received yet I won't mark one. If the discussion gets resolved then I definitely make sure I post a best response to whomever I thought was the most helpful or contributed the most to the discussion. As a genral rule I'll try to make sure I've posted best responses if I know life is going to get busy and the chances of me logging back in on a regular basis are not good. For example, I posted new discussion while I was home on winter break and chose to do my best responses before returning to work and school since I knew I would be quite busy. Its all up to you just come up with a system that works for you and be fair in choosing best responses.

I try to leave it at least a week before selecting a best response on my discussions. I like to give people plenty of time to respond and, to be honest, it's often such a hard decision to make that I reckon a week at least, just to give me time to digest all the responses

Yes, I always find it a hard decision to make because there's always at least two or three comments that are equally good. I'm definitely making the decision too early so will hold off for a week or two from now on.

louisefrank I always wait a week as people are not always here all the time and that way we might get a few more discussions, and I just pick the one I feel has answered thde discussion in the best manner
possible. I read each a nd every response thoroughly then go back
and read again. I try hard to pick the very best in my own mind.,
It is my discussion so I have the right to choose the one I feel'was the best. I think we all love to get them and I am so far behind that I
wish there was some way to thank all who have given me best responses.

I must admit it makes my day when I get a best response. I have definitely been awarding them too quickly so I will take your advice and wait a week or two. Thank you.

Hello, Louise. When I first joined MyLot, someone said it was best to wait at least a week before awarding a BR, as that gave people plenty of time to respond, and usually after a week, you've received most of the responses you'll get.
I actually tend to wait even longer, because I tend to forget about BRs, and then I'll decide to spend perhaps one day a month going through and awarding BRs. Now that MyLot reproduce the BR in the notification, it's easier to keep tabs on them.
Occasionally, I'll get a response that is heads and shoulders above the rest, and in that case I'll award it when I see it. It's entirely up to you, but I do think it's a bit pointless the way some people award a BR within an hour of starting the discussion. To me, that signals that the discussion starter wants to get the discussion out of the way as soon as possible in order to start another one, so you won't get two way traffic as you do in the best discussions.
Some people say they delay awarding BRs in case it puts people off responding. I take the view that if people are only responding to try to get a BR, they probably haven't got anything really valuable to say anyway, so that doesn't influence me. If I see a discussion I like, I'll go in even if the BR has been awarded. It's nice to get BRs, but it's the discussions that are the most important reason for being on MyLot - at least as far as I'm concerned.

Sandra, what you said here:
"When I first joined MyLot, someone said it was best to wait at least a week before awarding a BR, as that gave people plenty of time to respond..."
is straight from the FAQs on Best Responses:

Good advice!

Thank you, Sandra - You are one of the people who ALWAYS gives a considered and sensible reply. I have been reading through the myLot guidelines but there's an awful lot to take in. Thank you for the link to that particular FAQ, Alice.

I usually wait a week, and in a couple of instances, I've waited two weeks. I wait until I think the discussion is coming to a close, but you really never know when that is. I've worried, too, that a better response may come along after I've already chosen best response. But I've been happy with the best responses I've chosen thus far.

Bear in mind that a 'Best Response' is simply 'Boasting Rights'. What actually counts (from your respondents' point of view) is your '+' and those of any other people who visit the discussion and choose to give user ratings.
I wait for, often, over a month. It depends how frequently replies are coming in. If I find a response worth commenting on and I do so, I find that, quite often, more responses will follow. It's all a matter of how much quality is in your discussion.

If you read the faq[s, mylot says we are to wait at least a week before we give best response to give others a chance to respond that choose to. I wait for a very long time, sometimes months. Once the week is up then we can give it anytime, but I think the longer you wait the better it will be for all, as giving it to soon, isn't giving others a fari chance of maybe getting the best response. Not that I am tryi9ng to get a best response, as I am not, but I am just thinking about the others who might have good responses and they are past by becuase it was chosen way to soon. Good luck to you and happy mylotting.

I seldom give the best response. In fact you just reminded me to go my unresolved discussion since i have a lot of discussions that i have yet to give my BR. But it is advised to wait for a time before giving a BR. As you said you will never know when a response is worth giving a BR. If you rate to early, you just feel a little guilty for not waiting a little longer. The BR is one way to boost a persons morale, i usually give it to the newbies to motivate them to post more.

I usually wait a few weeks before I give out a best response. After the initial wave of responses, a few would usually still trickle in even after a week or two. So I wait. Sometimes it would take a month before I award it. It is helpful in keeping my 'unresolved' tab organized and tidy. After that, if I still get responses, it doesn't matter much even if it looks like I picked a wrong one.

I wait at least a week and sometimes much longer.
I like to be able to take my time as it means rereading every response so I work my way down and say the last number which I thought was best, then if I find a better one, I say that number aloud and carry on down the list. The number in my head at the end of rereading the responses, is the one who gets best response.

Hi louisefrank,
I usually wait at least a week before choosing a best response. It's true, that sometimes, when you picked a BR, more comments will still follow. But I agree with you, once you set your mind that the one you picked is the best, you kept in mind that it's still the best, no matter how many comments will follow.
By the way, I don't always pick a BR. It depends on my discussion. If my post is all about sharing your experiences, I wouldn't pick a best response because all that they've shared are welcome and correct. But if my discussion consists of questions like How, Why, When, What etc, then that's the time I'll pick the best answer.

Well, i do but i always feel like there are many who have given their creative thoughts in their own way. So when i mark one best response, it means others are not best?. So i wish if mylot has to select more than one to select as best response. I would always make a point, that my act doesnot make others to feel bad.
But when i got one, i was rather happy too that mine was considered a good suggestion!

in my opinion: i need 1month to decide the BR to my discussion.
bec, there are so many things could happened after we start our discussion , like maybe you are too busy to participate it frequently,or there still just have few comment.
so , we need time, need time to do something better.
the other things, i also will put my attentions to the discussion even i have made the BR. i made the BR just bec i think it was the best response for me when i made the decide. but i still hope there still would have some new ideas like uncrown mayor.
good luck

i don't care much on this matter,as the important thing should be share our opinion with each other in here.deciding the "best response" only a way for increaseing our earning fast. on discussion only have one best response,if we care much on this, it is hard to decision, so that, i would like to deciding on the first day whom's response is very interested to me, i will give. good luck and have a nice day!

I only give best responses if I'm in the mood to do so. Whether I get best response in a discussion is of no importance to me; I just want to share my opinion. I think that what Benny said is true...the whole 'best reponse' thing is a gimmick.
