I Don't Know About You But I Think This Is Rather Cruel: The Pet Washer

I heard this story on the very late news last night. It's a product called The Pet Washer and was "invented" in Japan and for awhile only used there, but some are even found in America now. It almost looks like a gigantic microwave and a dog or cat is placed in it, and one pushes a few buttons to start the wash cycle, it also can dry the pet as well. Now some might think this is a great invention and idea but there's already been some controversy about it as some think it smacks as downright cruelty, especially if one sees a video of a cat being "washed" this way. Would you ever think of using such a device to wash your pet? Would you subjugate your beloved pet to this knowing it might freak your pet out or would you just stick to the good old fashioned means of washing your pet? Here's an article about it http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/opinion/mark-green/dog-washing-machine-cruel-or-kind-1.685133?referrerPath=1.135737 Here's the video of the cat being washed. The poor thing is panic stricken http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VfSl0iGAus&feature=player_embedded

I don't like the idea of it either. All I can think is that at some point there will be a malfunction and a huge recall of these machines. I don't trust that a robot will be in any way gentle in bathing a pet! When did we get so lazy?

Yeah the way that water is coming down on the dog (and cat) looks more like a torrential downpour of water and a pet could maybe even drown with so much water coming at full blast like that

I saw the video and I don't like it either. The cat was obviously frightened. But one comment made about the video said that the cat was jumping with joy???!!!

I didn't see that comment...but then you have a lot of stupid remarks posted under a lot of videos at Youtube. At least most do agree that the cat was scared and thought that washer is cruel

I think that is awful. The crazy things that come out of Japan! I know it is hard to give some cats and dogs baths because some of them HATE water, but come on. If you love your pet, why would you want to torture them like that? Now, I don't think the pet washer actually harms the pet in any way, but I do think they don't enjoy it so it's crazy. Humans got to start putting themselves in their pets shoes! Would a person want to get in a machine that does that? At least a person would be able to close their eyes and probably know the soap was coming, but the poor pets have no idea what they are in. Not nice :(

I think what's worse is that the pet is confined in that washer and could panic the pet, I mean I think I would get claustrophobic myself in something like that and having so much water being doused on me like that

I've seen these things and I think they're quite strange. I think they're interesting inventions but I'm not so sure they're really the best thing in the world. I think those things just create more trouble for the pet like stress. I see no reason to stress a pet out anymore at bathtime than you need to and this just screams undue stress.

Yes, that poor cat in the video certainly not only looked stressed out but downright panic stricken

Shadow and Adda - This was taken after their bath.
I'm not sure what was going on in the mind of whoever invented the Pet Washer. But it was clearly shown in the video, that the cat was frightened. It wasn't jumping with joy as one commented in the video. It was trying to get out! I have two German Shepherd almost 4-month old puppies. Bathing them can be quite a challenge sometimes. But I'm not going to put them inside a Pet Washer! Yes, bathing them sometimes include some chasing around especially Shadow (the male) but that adds to the fun!

LOL--I used to have a cat named Shadow..a black cat. While that Pet washer is cruel in itself, I just hope there isn't a serious accident that would harm a pet in it...something like that washer should be recalled, but recalls only happen if accidents or deaths happen

I guess the name Shadow is very in demand! The truth is, Shadow's real name in his papers is Angel Law of Fang. But we decided that Shadow is much more suitable for him because he just follows you everywhere you go. Is your cat Shadow the one in your profile picture? That's the harsh reality of technology. Machine inventions pop out like mushrooms these days. Either they make our lives better or they make it worse. But I wonder why the need for such machines like the Pet Washer? I know that it can be time consuming and some effort to have one of our pets needs, taken care of. Such as bathing. But to put them inside a box that obviously scares the wits out of them, is way beyond me!

That avatar photo is one I scanned from the cover of a book called "Your Magical Cat"...it just seemed so appropriate with my user name of pyewacket. I do have a black cat now though named Pyewacket. As for Shadow...he's long gone in Rainbow Bridge Here's a photo of my Pyewacket

Oh, poor, poor cat. For some cats and esp. dogs it may work out. But for this cat especially, and many others, this looks like torment. I don't think it is safe either, because the cats get it into their eyes and breathe it in (water), and it doesn't even scrub well. Though my cats don't enjoy their very occasional professional baths, it is done much more gently, where they sit in a woman's arms to shampoos and dries them gently. We are wayyy overdue to have them take baths, but they handle it surprisingly well. Not cased in a closed box either, so she makes sure they don't get soap or water in their eyes.

I have to agree that looked like an awful lot of water coming on and it's a wonder the poor cat didn't drown. There was another video I saw of a large Husky being crammed into the washer and it didn't look too happy either--they really should ban this kind of "invention"

I think ppl would think differently if it was a child in there running around thinking it was drowning. The poor cat probably felt that way. I think if you can't take care of your pet right or at least hired someone to do the things that you can't or don't know how to do then you should not have a pet. They have ppl that will wash your pet right. Heck, my kids would do it for a couple of bucks! LOL Anyways, I don't think they should have that machine. *Peace and Love get's you through everything in Life**

I really think they should consider banning that pet washer. Only going to be a matter of time where a pet might be seriously injured--that cat almost did look like it was drowning with the force of the water.

I saw that on CNN and thought, What the heck? Like the reporters said, it sort of looks like a microwave oven. Use the laundry tub or the hose please. Animals hate rainstorms as much as humans. We don't go outside to wash so why should pets. Yet alone be subjected to a washing machine they're locked inside of. Unfriggin real. As always..... HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Actually my real initial thought was that it didn't look so much like a microwave but more like the gas chambers that are used to "euthanize" unwanted pets in kill shelters They should really consider banning this machine...I'm just betting they'll be some kind of accident where an animal panics so much that they could hurt themselves
19 Mar 10
I saw this on our news yesterday and was absolutely amazed that anyone would be so stupid as to think that this would be a great idea. No way would I ever want to put any animal into something as awful as that, for heavens sake.

I wonder who the idiot was who thought up this Pet Washer in the first place. Are people so lazy they don't want to bathe a pet the old fashioned way? If that's the case they don't deserve to have a pet in the first place

This thing is crazy and looks like an accident waiting to happen. What happens if it malfunctions and the water comes out scorching hot...I saw the emergancy stop button but that can malfunction as well. The dog didn't seem to mind it too much but the poor cat seemed hysterical. Cats are generally not bathed. They are more of a self cleaning animal. I think it's simply a way for lazy ppl to get out of having to bathe their animal. I would never use one. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

I couldn't help thinking the same thing that the machine could malfunction in some way and as you say an accident waiting to happen. They really should take these things off the market altogether

hi pyewacket thats just plain animal cruelty, and that cat was not funny at all, that was so mean. the kitty was plainly scared out of its wits'why would any invent something that awful? thats just plain cruel. I felt so bad for the kitten and the people who made comments also felt the same way. there was nothing funny about that at all, nothing. they should be ashamed of themselves.I hope that nobody here in the US buys any of those pet washers thats just too despicable for words. I love cats and would never use that contraption at all.

I'm glad the people who made comments under that video thought it was cruelty too...poor thing, it was terrified. Whatever happened to cleaning/washing a pet the old fashioned way?

the pet might experience trauma, or be in shock when it comes out. i think it is better to wash ur pet by hand. i have done my late cat and dogs. it is no big deal.

That was absolutely terrible to watch, that poor thing. They have one of these stupid things at a pet store in a different town but I've never seen anyone using it, thank god. I think that's just a totally cruel thing to do to an animal, especially a cat. They already don't like water or being confined so let's just confine them in a little box with spraying water. Genius.

Most animals don't like to be confined...ask any person with a pet especially a cat who tries to put one in a traveling case when going to the vet. And then to have all that water gushing at the animal like in the machine is downright cruel

Yes..I saw this in news day before yesterday i think..It looks like all is good..but I don't think it is good to use...what happens some electronic disaster happen in that machine. They can be very dangerous. So I strictly don't recommend this...Washing pet is somewhat enjoyment and we should do by our own.Though I didn't have a pet but I can feel that.So for me that machine is not that good..

I'm glad you agree that this machine is a bad idea...it could always malfunction somehow and would do harm to the animal
