I and my husband both need more physical activity in our lives. We eat a good diet and we're not incredibly unhealthy, but we're both a little out of shape and lacking in physical strength and endurance. Neither of us is very athletic, and we've never enjoyed sports. Nevertheless, we'd like to find some physical activities that we can do together. The qualifications are that these activities must be fun, or we won't stick with it, and they must not cost money. We can spare $10-20 for some small equipment but we can't afford gym fees, exercise machines, etc. So, any ideas? What do you do to stay in shape?

First eating a good diet is good way to stay in shape, then doing exercise as walking to work if not far from home, fast walk around park with family or friends after dinner at least for 30 minutes every day, which must not cost money, also which can chatting with somebody while walking.Anyway healthy is very important for us.

In fact now there are a lot of exercise you and your husband choose, like walking, hiking, jogging, swimming, dancing with videos, jump rope, bicycling outside, even popular exercise ball and hula hoop ect.I think the best is walking and swimming for you. The important point is keeping in line every day.
Except exercise the good diet also is important for keeping good shape. For breakfast one cup of oatmeal, one apple and some oat biscuit, for lunch some food you like, for supper donot eat too much.

It's important to do something that you both enjoy as if you enjoy the exercise you will want to do it more than if you didn't like a certain exercise. Once you have found one you like it's a good idea to gradually step up your regime and build up your time.

Yeah a lot of people start jogging and then stop because they don't get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

I have hand weights, rubber bands, and an exercise ball. I also have a machine, but I know you said you can't afford one. I also have a jump rope and hula hoop. I incorparate all these into my workouts. I like to workout with exercise tv, we have it on our cable tv. They have tons of workouts to choose from.

I think I'd like an exercise ball, because I do yoga sometimes, and there are some poses that could be assisted with a ball. I also think that hula-hooping sounds like a lot of fun. I loved doing that when I was a kid and was actually pretty good at it! I think the sight of my husband trying to hula hoop would be hilarious.

I use skipping rope all these year, it keeps me in shapes. You only need to do it 5 -10 mins a day. A skipping rope only cost round $4 and you can have it all the time.

Walking is a great exercise and it doesn't cost you anything other than a pair of shoes. Same with jogging. Great exercise. Personally, I like to play tennis. If you can't afford a racquet, check out garage sales etc. I also love to bike ride. I do belong to a gym and I love the spin (indoor cycling) classes. DH and I throw our bikes in the truck and drive down to the beach and ride our bikes for miles on the trails along the beach. I would definitely encourage you to take a look at your budget and see if you can't tweak some things here and there. Belonging to the gym is soemthing that I do to keep myself healthy but I also think that it is a relatively cheap source of entertainment as well. We work out 6 days a week ( and I am a former couch potato) and on Sunday we spend the entire day at our club. We play tennis in the morning and spend the afternoon at the pool. I saw a special on Dr. Oz about people who live to be 100. One of the featured guests was a doctor from Loma Linda. He said that when he bought his home 65 years ago, he bought a 2 story house. He felt that if he could walk up and down the staircase 10 times a day, it would be all of the exercise that he would ever need. Hard to argue with a guy who's still working at 100 years of age.

Believe me, there is nothing in our budget that we can tweak. We are both in college, my husband is unemployed, and I only bring in a small income gigging with a string quartet. The only way we're even able to pay the rent each month is that my husband's parents are helping us out. So a gym membership is absolutely not an option. We also can't afford bikes, even used ones, as much as I'd love to have a bike. Walking is getting really, really boring and I can't jog because I have knee issues. Next time I'm in the market for a new apartment, I'll consider one on the second or third floor.

Are there any places nearby to go hiking? This is good exercise, gets you outside and lets you see nature(depending on where you can go) which can be enjoyable. Another simple possibility might be to walk to a park, if there is one close enough, and swing on the swings if they have some that are adult size. Try skipping rope together, this would require two individual ropes, but maybe you just might find it fun. Tennis is a lot of fun but would require a little more investment for the equipment and would be something you have to work into; but if there are public courts where you live the money on rackets, balls and shoes might be worth it in the long run.

We're in Colorado, so we do have some really great nature trails, most of which involve a good uphill hike. We do that occasionally during the summer, but this time of year a lot of those trails aren't even open to the public. I suggested jump rope, but my husband hates the very idea of it. Not sure why. I might get one just for me to use when he's not home.

Before I could afford the gym, I often took walks in the evenings. I would carry weights with me (2 or 3lb weights.) On rainy or snowy days I would do a work out video inside. I LOVE dancing work out videos, taebo, the biggest loser, etc. There are a lot of great videos out there and if you check out www.amazon.com you can get reviews on dvds and see what people did and didn't like about them!
I'm so thankful now that we have our new gym, Planet Fitness. They offer a $10 a month membership - which includes unlimited working out, 24 hours a day/7 days a week! It's fantastic. Most gyms are so expensive, which is why I could never afford to go to one before. I'm so thankful this chain came to town! Fitness is so important - IT SHOULD BE AFFORDABLE!

I don't mind working out with a video so much, but my husband doesn't enjoy it. Even if he did, there's not enough space in our living room for two people to do taebo or kickboxing or anything of that nature. Someone would end up with a black eye, lol.
Someday, when I'm not scraping to try to put food on the table, I'd love to get a monthly membership to a yoga studio or something like.
