Survival Skills Should Be REQUIRED Learning Throughout School K-12

What are your thoughts on this? Should Survival Skills be an ongoing REQUIRED course throughout our basic education system, K-12? When you think about it, our government requires us to learn subjects such as English Grammar and Composition, Mathematics, Science, and History...but what about the BASICS that we need in order to SURVIVE, such as how to obtain clean drinking water, build shelter, build a proper fire, make clothing and shoes, defend ourselves from predators, prepare for natural disasters, and how to grow plants for food and/or be able to identify plants that are safe to eat? These are very basic essentials that MOST people, sadly and truly, MOST people do not know how to do! If we did add Survival Skills as a course in school, in my opinion it should NOT be considered an "elective" (like Home Economics, which in my opinion, should also be required) -- it is a necessity! One of the strongest factors to consider is: What happens to people during catastrophes, such as Hurricane Katrina, when they don't know the first thing about survival? They begin to steal from others, kill, destroy, become violent...they panic. Can't we avoid this type of destructive fallout by requiring Survival Skills to be taught throughout school? And I don't just mean one class in 5th grade, or 10th grade. I mean throughout school -- such as every year, or every other year -- to ensure that all people grow to become experts in Survival -- just as we ensure that they become experts in Math and English. So what do you say? What are you thoughts?

I agree with you too. Survival skills should be a must for all of us. I am actually planning on reading some books about it. I used to be in a coed scouts group and I do know a few ways to survive, but not entirely everything. But, I do know a small portion of the basics.

I agree with you completely. Everything you outlined is perfectly sensible, and not intrusive in any way.

i agree so very much Survival is often neglected because of the technology we readily have available start with how to make fire and then obtain drinking water and then shelter hunt these are things that kids should learn so that they don't become spoiled little brats who throw tantrums in public places
