MyLotters who have an empty nest-

Hubby and I have been empty nesters a little over a year. I have to ask a few questions after a little bit of background. Every response is greatly appreciated. Since our children have left the home, I find that we don't eat at our dining room table. First, after your child(ren) left, did you find that your dining table lacked its purpose? Did it become a "catch-all" for the mail and other stuff? Or is it just empty and not used unless company comes or your children come over for a meal? Second, if your table hasn't been used, how long has it been? Do you plan on using it again with just you and your spouse? I feel like we will never just use our dining table for just the two of us. It's just too big for us.

I can't really relate to what you are going through there as i don't have any children despite being in my 30's so all i can describe is the other side of it and since we were to the age where we would think about moving out at least one of us has lived with my parents. My sister couldn't wait to get out of the house when she got to that age and thought getting out on her own would be great until she had to start paying the bills. She moved around a lot that i remember and would come over quite often to do some stuff around the house for some extra money and do some of her laundry and after the last time she moved she moved back home and took over all of my space and it was so nice when she didn't live at mom and dad's so i decided it was time for me to go if her and her family was going to live there, because there didn't seem to be enough room for all of their stuff and mine to coexist. As a family when everyone was there everyone kind of did their own thing come dinnertime, since our table wasn't big enough for everyone to eat at. It probably is two things for you a little more peace and quiet maybe too much at times and maybe you just got used to it being hectic around there, but give it time and you will get used to it as we all can use a little peace and quiet some of the time.

Our sons left home some years ago but, if we are both home at lunchtime, we still use the dining table and i usually eat all my meals there. I just feel more comfortable sitting at the table to eat. I also use the dining table for craft activities and, if I'm in the middle of something, I'll push the craft stuff to one end and put the tablecloth at the other whilst we eat. My husband uses it for board games when his friends come round.
