Why do Americans love tan skin?

I feel like having tan skin compared to really white skin makes me look better. I honestly think every culture does something that others think is kinda crazy because it makes them feel beautiful! Just my opinion of course.

I'm in England, and most people like tanned skin. I don't. I like pale skin. it looks clearer, smoother and healthier. and tanning is a sign of sun damage, which is premature aging. I really don't understand how people can describe sun damage as "a healthy glow" sorry, a healthy glow is the natural radiance of un sun damaged skin.

paleflare hi a lot of us Americans like tans because we naturally tan when we live in a place like california where we get a lot of sun, we get the vitamin D we need and a becoming tan. It comes naturally for a lot of us who go for walks a lot or work in our gardens. we do not try to tan, we just do as we live in t his particular climate. It had nothing whatever to do w ith that stereotype crap either.

Maybe because Americans have already pale skin so they find tanned skin more attractive, they don't need to have those whitening solutions to achieve a fair skin tone, this is a fascination among Asians especially Filipinos. Americans are quite drawn to people with brown and roasted skin, I mean it's the common attitude among people on earth, we are quite attractive to objects which are not in our position, so the same with people, if we find someone not on the same category as ours then we are attractive. Filipinos belong to brown race, so we began looking on the other side of the fence thinking we are more beautiful if we have this white and fair skinned tone. I think it's all about fascination.

I am a Filipina and I personally prefer being tan. In my observation, Americans and other Caucasians like to be tanned because for them tan is sexy and healthy. They have this idea that being white is being pale and being pale is unhealthy (you look sick). On the other hand, Asians, specifically Filipinos like and to some extent obsessively want to have white skin. I think this obsession of being white roots from the mentality and stereotype that people with white skin are considered as beautiful and rich. It may also come from the idea that being an artist or a tv/movie personality means a huge pay. But Filipino show business is dominated by 'whites' and so it would be difficult for people who aren't to penetrate into it. That is why Filipinos are obsessed to be 'white'.

Just like what someone has commented,different culture has its own opinion about the standard of beauty,so you don't need to feel weird about their"crazy behavior",just like a saying "what you haven't get is the best",maybe they are also curious to the look that they are in tan skin rather than white skin.

i don't see anything special :3 tanned or white :3 what's the difference? ahahaha i like people with good personalities thats all ahahaha

Their skin is white. And no matter how tanned they are, their skin will be back to white again. And they think it's cool to have such a white skin. Ao, that's why they love to sunbath.. :)

I guess they like tanned skin because fair skin is very much common in their country.they can easily see people with fair skin at their place.anything that cannot be easily found in one place is something that they are attracted to the most.it is the same with some Korean or Japanese people who like big eyes.

its all because human are not contented.. its the irony of life.. People who have white skin wish to have theirs tan. People who are tan which to have white skin. Its like people who are fat wants to be skinny while other skinny people wants to have a little fat. its the way people are.. That's just life..being human as we are. that's the irony of life.. don't you get it?

Probably because around here its real unavoidable. Unless you live in a box, and don't ever venture outside, then you're going to be lucky to keep pale skin. It would be unhealthy to take the measures pople would have to take to keep skin from getting tan. And, a nice tan indicates a person who's healthy, and gets out. which can say a lot about a person.

Maybe because they don't often see people with tan skin in their country. If you leave where everyone has almost the same complexion as you.. then your mind would think isn't there another skin complexion there besides white? I don't know this must be something to try new things for awhile.

In My Country, All American is always look for tan skin and I think maybe tan skin is unique and good look!

I couldn't care less about the color of my skin or anyone else's for that matter. But I do want to say that working hard to get a tan and keep a tan will only hurt anyone in the long run...You age faster and your chances of developing cancer skyrockets. Your skin is the color it is because it's part of who you are...It's your nationality...Be thankful for what you'e bee given and leave it be. Find something else to obsess over.

because they are white LOL i mean they want different color for a change coz they've been since birth. actually same in my country, most women here wants to be white coz we are prone with our color already so just for a change as we feel that being white is more beautiful in our opinion but then american wants tan coz most of them have freckles so they can hide it with tan color coz if they are white then freckles is more noticeable that why they feel that they are beautiful coz those freckles arent that noticeable.
