From my childhood I used to love eating Palm fruit, the white coloured inside fruit of which is called NUNGU in South India. It is so tender and the water that contains is good for summere boils. The soft tender ones just vanish in the mouth and the riped ones are a bit rough and taste like a coconut piece. For some people, the hard ones will pose digestion problem. It has cooling effect and is very good for summer. Do you like to eat the palm fruit and what is your favourite, whether soft tender ones or hard ones?

Hello Buchi_bulla. We don't have palm fruits where we live, but I think that it must be very tasty as can be seen from your detailed discussion. We have different kinds of water melons, which are juicy and sweet, good for summer when it is hot. Now we can have watermelons all the year round with the advancement of farming technology. Take care.

Hai Williamjisir, today I was thinking about you as to why you are not at all seen in mylot now-a-days. I have not seen your discussions also from a long time. I hope you and your family are fine. Well this thati nungu is very tasty and sweet. There will be very less water inside the fruit and that will taste heavenly. If you break open the palm tree fruit, the image of which I have uploaded, you will get 3 or 4 white tender fleshy and juicy nungu inside the palm fruit. In the summer season for a very short period we get that. It has not yet started coming for this Summer.

Hello Buchi_bulla. Thank you for the response and the nice greeting. Well, I do seldom visit mylot these days, but still I try to read a few discussions of my friends here. As to the juicy fruit, I think that you are very lucky to have that special fruit in your area. When there is some kind of fruit we don't have in our place, it must be very expensive to get one. I wish to see the kind you have mentioned here and would like to taste it if possible. Have a good day, friend.

Hello Williamjisir, thanks for the post. I have uploaded an image of the thati nungu. You zoom the picture and you will get a clear picture of the fruit. On the palm tree, ball like fruits will come as bunch. If you open the ball like fruit, inside that, three or four thati nungu fruits will be there, the picture of which I am uploading now. The yellow skin will be bitter. So we will remove the skin. Inside, as you can see, white transparent jelly like fruit will be seen. In the middle of that jelly fruit little water is found, which is very tasty.

Hi Aunty,
Even i love eating tati nungu. But only thing is i hate to peel the outer one. so whenever they use to get it in my home. MY father or mom use to peel the skin and give it to me so i used to have it. Till now they peel for me and give. And yes the riped one will be bit rough and tastes like a coconut piece since this had got cool effects its very good in summer.
Nungu fruit has nutritional and medicinal value too. It is packed with minerals. With almost no protein, fat, or carbohydrates, the fruit is a boon for those on a diet and patients. The fruit along with other edible parts of the palmyrah is used for treating stomach and skin disorders.
Have a great day

Hai Deepa, I knew that it cools the body system but never knew about the nutritional and medicinal value of it. Thanks for the information. Even my daughter feels bored to peel the skin. I only make it ready and give it to her. It has not started coming here for this summer. I am eagerly waiting for the fruit. Have a good day.

Yes. I was talking about thati nunjalu or thati munjalu only. Here we get thati munjalu in the eatable form that is removed from the original fruit. Some places they cut the fruit in front of us and give fresh thati munjalu. I like sapota fruit too.

Hard palm fruit is like a coconut in taste. But it does not suit everyone's digestion. In my childhood I was eating hard ones too. But now I cannot. Tender ones are very tasty, especially along with the juice inside.

Hey Buchi dear i am a bit confused, here in my home town in Orissa the inside white material from palm, we call it 'talsaj', from old, too much grown fruit it is hard like stone, not tasty, if you eat, may have stomach ache..but those from tender palm are sweet soft and watery, i used to eat lot, this year i have not eaten..
During my 65 days stay in Hyderabad i saw people selling what they called 'palmfruit', they covered the fruit with tender leaves, i am sure it was not palm of my place.. lol was that NUNGU?
Sorry for late response.. Thanks for sharing.
Welcome always.
Cheers.

Yes you are right. I am talking about nungu which, in Hyderabad they call thati nungu. Then what is 'talsaj'? Is it not nungu?

If i am not wrong, it is the Sugar Palm fruit. We call it Kaong. The sweet fresh fruit tastes just like young coconut fruit. The young fruits are soft and the older fruits are harder. We mix it usually in fruits salad together with nata de coco, the soft jelly-like residue formed from many overnights' storage of young coconut juice.
I like both the soft and hard ones. If it is fresh, i'd prefer the soft ones. If its already in bottles (preserved) the hard oens are ok.

Lovely discussion,
When i saw the post i could not help but comment. Strangely i have been thinking of Nungu today as i was planning to write on "summer foods that cool our body". Sadly i do not get to see or eat nungu now because i have shifted to Gujarat. This post did bring back memories of my childhood days when i freaked out on nungu. I love the sensation when the outer covering breaks & the nectar rushes into the mouth. MMMMmmmmmm....

Thank you for the comment friend. You are very correct. I pick up full fruit of nungu as broken nungus would have lost juice inside. I am visualising eating of nungu, by biting one layer and trying to take the full juice into the mouth without loosing a bit of it, as the juice itself is very little in the fruit. My God, it is heavenly friend. You have described it well. Thanks for the interesting post.

Hi Buchi_bulla, it is great! :) But we cant eat much of it. :) We call it munjilu. I eat seasonal fruits, and this one generally comes around April - May. :) I dont know its nutritional value, but we do take it a couple of times during summers. :) I prefer the softer ones, with the juice inside. :) So does my papa. :)

Yes. They are called thati munjalu in Hyderabad. I too prefer tender ones. But within no time they vanish in the mouth. Harder ones will stay in the mouth for some time and give taste of a coconut. In my childhood I was eating harder ones. But now it does not suit my digestion power.

The tree will be like a coconut tree and just like coconuts, round shaped fruits will be hanging as a bunch on the top of the tree. That fruit is to be broken and three or four palm fruits with light pink shaped skin will be found. It contains juice too.

I think it is what we call kaong. Kaong is from sugar palm.

Well, the shops stock tonnes and tonnes of NUNGU during the summer seasons. Well, but the real good thing I got to see once was when boys of 13 years climbing palm trees and plucking the fruit on their own! Well, that was not in Chennai but my native village near Tirunelveli. The tender ones are the best and the the juicy layer in them is enough to make the body cool and beat the summer heat!

Yes. It is THE BEST for summer heat. The taste of Nungu is liked by many. Do you know how to make Thirunelveli Halwa? It is your speciality is it not? I know only to eat. If I make, it will not come out of the pan (banali/iluppai chatti). If you eat that, your mouth will not open. That is why I never make thirunelveli halwa. But I like it a lot.
