A middle school in Oregon is banning hugging. They are claiming it has gotten disruptive and out of control. I am a bit torn on this subject. In regards to safety and the ability to teach, they must do something. But the other side of my brain wonders if they couldn't do something else, or just handle it on a case by case. I wish all schools were just worried about the hugging going on.

West Sylvan has plenty of company nationwide among schools that have banned hugging or limited the duration of hugs. Each of these towns has a school that has taken action: Oak Park, Ill.; Prattville, Ala.; Mascoutah, Ill.; Mesa, Ariz.; Vienna, Va.; Milford, Conn.; Hillsdale, N.J.; and Fort Worth, Texas. In 2005, Sky View Middle School in Bend took action, and so has a school in South Australia, across the Pacific.
The Mesquite Independent School District in north Texas banned skinny jeans, a Massachusetts high school banned the word "meep," a California school district banned the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary because of its "age-inappropriate" words, and several school districts have banned lunchtime games of tag and dodge ball.
What do you think of all of this? I really think that more control over situations and enforcement of rules could help prevent these bans. Banning tag? This helps to promote the obesity problem in this country, in my humble opinion.

This is absurd, really. Do they just want the kids to sit in front of computers all day and be good little blobs, just getting bigger and bigger? Kids need exercise, it improves mental function and physical health, and some outside time gives them Vitamin A and D.
What the heck is wrong with hugging, there should be more of it going on, not less. OMG? What is the problem with that?
I'm glad I live in Canada.

Banned the word "meep?" LOL That's just funny. haha What was the problem there?
The dictoinary because of "age in-appropriate words?" Like kids are going to sit there and read the dictionary from cover to cover?
Hugging should be allowed between consernting people, HOWEVER, if people were hugging people without the consent of the one being hugged, it's physical harassment, and I can understand it. If someone touched me and I did not want to be touched, I'd be bugged to.

I agree. Regarding the age appropriate dictionary... who didnt look up those words? lol
meep
The most versatile word in the English language, or in fact any language!
Can mean whatever you want it to mean, but the most popular uses are:
1. An exclamation akin to 'ouch' or 'uh oh..'
2. Filling in the blanks where other (rude) words would go.
3. A greeting! I personally say meep instead of Hello...
4. A random expression of happiness used to fill gaps in conversation.

What on Earth is it with some people? Banning HUGS? Are these people for real?
this is stupid, I really do not get this at all, so emotional contact is a bad thing...are people supposed to be cold emotionless drones or something?
It is a sad world we live in.

Personally I think it should be limited. I know it sounds cold, but school is really not for socializing, and showing affection. It is supposed to be a place to learn. I really think schools have been to liberal, and socialization has taken over learning. I really wish such rules didn't have to made to begin with. I teach my kids to keep public affection to times maybe not so public, stay out of personal spaces I guess.
