In India we buy sugarcane for Sun/crop festival which comes on January 14th. It is called Sankranthi by Telugu/Kannada people and Pongal by Tamil speaking people. It is a thanks giving festival to Sun God for the good crops that is grown. On that day, Sugarcane is brought home and sweet and hot pongals (rice items) and a side dish with all the vegetables, are prepared. When I was small, my father used to bring two big sugarcane sticks and we all used to eat it by removing the skin by our teeth. When I was grown, I used to drink sugarcane juice or skin removed pieces of sugarcane juice as I did not have patience to remove the skin with my teeth. Do you like to eat sugarcane? How do you like to eat it, stick by removing the skin by your teeth, extracted juice or skin removed pieces?

Hi Buchi, some of the chinese people here whom their ancestors came from certain parts of china use a couple of sugarcane plants to welcome and celebrate the ninth day of chinese new year. Ornaments made from yellow color papers are tied on the top of the sugarcane. Sugarcane with straight and plump stall in bright yellow color is the selling point Sugarcane juice stalls are available here at the busy street as well as under the big tree shades during scorching dry season. It's so convenient to get it whenever we need to quench thirst. We don't have to buy the cut sugarcane and to bite and to suck the juice anymore, like what we used to do earlier. Biting the thick and hard skin sometimes might damage our teeth. There are three types of sugarcane available here. The most popular one is the one in yellow color. People here do growth the dark red sugarcane. Besides using it to cook mixed herbal tea it can be taken raw as well like the yellow one. There is another type of sugarcane which has rather small stall and we call it bamboo cane. From the name given to it means that it looks exactly similar to small size greenish bamboo. It's solely for preparing sugarcane tea. We take this tea to reduce the body heat. Happy posting and have a nice day

I never heard of this small sugarcane stick and also the sugarcane tea. Thanks for the detailed information that you have provided Ikbooi. . Even the Chinese way of celebrating 9th day of New Year is interesting. Because of Mylot, we learn new new things everyday, news from all over the world. We must thank mylot for this. Hai Sreekala, Even I heard that eating sugarcane by peeling the skin by our teeth not only cleans the teeth but it is good for gums too. But after some age, we loose patience to eat so and prefer juice for which we can add ginger, lemon and ice.

Hi dear, You have provided so many information about sugar cane. I have never heard about the sugar cane tea, thanks for sharing these dear. Sugar cane is good for teeth, biting and chewing the same is healthy for our teeth. (I read it somewhere). I agree the leaves of sugar cane itch our skin and sometimes its edges can cut the skin too so be careful while dealing with the big plants of sugar cane.

Hi Buchi, I really don’t like the sweetness of sugar cane. In my childhood sugar cane was very rare in our place and which was sold in a temple at the time of festival and people used to buy it from there. When I grown up I got a piece of sugar cane and I planted it in the yard which spread in the whole place. Here in Delhi, in summer sugar cane juice is in high demand but I never drink that juice. It seems you are enjoying the sugar cane and its juice. Its skin is very hard and your teeth must be strong to eat the same without removing the skin.

Hi Scree, I did grow sugarcane in the courtyard before. But I cut them off later after I suffered from the grievous itchiness on my hands due to the tiny fuzz on the leaves. I found this after having the same situation several times.

Yes. Sugarcane juice is very sweet. But people who like it will happily have it. I like it but I am diabetic. Hence cannot drink freely. I share with my daughter as at least half-a-cup is not gone inside and sugar to that extent is avoided.

Hai Ikbooi, in Tamil language there is a saying, learn theft also and forget. That is you have to learn everything to know about it, though you do not follow it. You also grow many plants and trees in your garden and have an experience of it. Rambutan is there in your garden, hibiscus and now sugarcane. I want to see your garden please.

It's been a long time since I've eaten sugarcane. But i remember when i was a child that we could eat as much as we want since we have a lot planted in our backyard. We even made sugar out of it. We eat it until our mouths and teeth gave up for skinning it. What we have is of two different colors, the greenish and the reddish colored sugarcane. I like the reddish color since it's sweeter compare to the green one.

Sugarcane is very good in summer. The best way to eat sugarcane is first to remove the upper layer either with teeth if your teeth are so strong you can check out or with a knife and the middle layer will not be so hard. It is a juicy part. We can bite it easily and crush it under our teeth. Then you can understand the real.....yummy....it will be..the juice which come out of it you know will be so tasty that I am getting water in my mouth. By eating this even it helps to clean our teeth, blood circulation increases in the gums and our teeth become strong.......Juice it's a very easy way to have like crushed under machine and have it. But eaten by our teeth is the real way and the taste we get. juice we drink off with in minutes but bit by bit when we eat then we get the real maaza in it.....Even there is little hard work behind this right so it will be so tasty than juice.....

Very true. It is an exercise for the teeth and gum. Further the taste of the juice is very fresh when we eat with our teeth.

I will eat sugarcane by crushing it with my teeth earlier. By crushing the sticks by teeth, makes our teeth clean and strong. But now, since i lost most of my teeth, I can only drink the juice and can't eat the stick. The juice is good for jaundice too and if lime and fresh ginger juice is added to it, it helps in digestion and controls vomitting sensation

i remember sugar cane during my childhood days when i visited my friends sugar cane plantation. during that time i didnt know about sugarcane yet. so when we got there i saw some people eating and i was laughing coz i though its a young bamboo and so i said why are they eating bamboo. then they also laugh at me and told me to try one. but i really dont eat it. i bring some of them and my parents are eating them and so thats the only time i know that its not really a bamboo but sugarcane and sugar come from it. I love to eat from stick i can still feel the juice running every time i take bite on it.

I like sugarcane juice but I haven't had the chance to really eat them. Because we don't usually get to buy them from supermarket but it is widely available from fruit juice vendors in the form of drinks. I never attempt to buy just the sugarcane from them though because it's really more convenient to drink it. Especially if you mixed it with lemon, it tasted even better. But if you are suffering from a cough, do try to refrain from drinking sugarcane.
