A very interesting question Gew. I guess the only issue I see is that you and me don't think the same, which would lead me to believe that we don't have the same morals, or ethics. So what I might not think is hurting you, might be very insulting to you, and hurtful. You might think that eating a dog or cat isn't hurting anyone else, but some would disagree with you. One of the problems with the country (and world) we live in is that we can no longer agree to disagree. It is much harder for use to find common ground, and work from there. I hate to say it Gew, but I really don't have an answer on this one for you.

Well I am sure that you and me would disagree on some moral or ethical positions, that is why I believe laws should not be based on subjective morals or ethics. Laws should be based on physical damage and property damage.
As to your example of eating dogs and cats, I would not practice in such activity but I know that some cultures do. So which side should the law be based on. Well what someone eats does not effect me. I might not want to eat it myself but my opinion should not prevent someone else from eating cats and dogs.
Now if you do not mind I have a cat to take care of.

Well do have the whole right to "persue happiness" right? Well it makes me happy when people mind their own business and leave me the heck alone. I don't need them to try and micromanage my life. Enfact, I won't stand for it.

Yep. Take the kids...put them in foster care..leave that adult to die of an OD if that is what they choose to do.

Because no one lives in a bubble and just because someone isn't hurting someone else directly does not mean that they're not hurting them indirectly. This is why every society has to look at the big picture and not just at what an individual wants to do.

"It is IMPOSSIBLE to do anything and not have it affect anyone else"
So I guess you should have a government agency created to come to my house and tell me what clothes I should wear tomorrow...or what TV shows I should watch...or what to fix for dinner...dang...am I even allowed to pick my own favorite color or do they have to do that for me too? How about what kind of kitten to get my daughter. Any I smart enough to do that? Or do I need someone else to pick it for me?
I think people need to mind their own business and let me live my own life.
I am not asking for approval for my life from anyone...and I don't want anyone to ask for approval of their lives from me. We are all adults....so lets make our own decisions.
I really hate people who think they have the right to dictate other people's lives. I am perfectly capable of making my own decisions in life.I don't need you or anyone else to tell me what to do. I am insulted when people when try.

Well said, spalladino.
I'm going to get myself in hot water here and trod on a few toes.
It is IMPOSSIBLE to do anything and not have it affect anyone else.
The idea that "I can do what I want, 'cause it's not hurting anyone else" is, sorry to offend, but short-sighted, short-term, small picture thinking.
The environmental degradation of our planet is caused because of that sort of thinking.
Family breakdown is caused by that sort of thinking.
No man is an island, or, to quote you, lives in a bubble.

This discussion brings to mind a situation that has happened very recently in my life.
It put one individual in the position of fearing for her liberty. It put me in danger of sacrificing either my job or my principles.
The two people involved wanted to benefit themselves. They were warned not to do what they were doing. They figured whose gonna get hurt?
In doing so, they were contravening the laws of another country, treading on the rights of the citizens of that country, risking the jobs of people in two countries, most of whom could ill afford to lose their jobs. They refused to see how their actions had any effect on anyone but themselves.
But then, they look at life through the keyhole of their own existence.

I guess maybe some folks can't be bothered to consider how their actions impact on others, sulynsi.

Everyone have to live his own life without respecting the bad things someone is doing to him. You have to live like you think and feel. If you thinking like a donkey, you are a donkey. If you thing something is good , believe in it whatever it takes and needs. If you don't do it you are like all , you live others life.
