Is it better to have a lot of choices for presidency?

Is it really the best for a country if it has a lot of choices when it comes to presidency? When I first realized exactly how many people were running for the job of president of the Philippines, that was the question that entered my mind. After the Ampatuan case (political massacre in Mindanao), I think I became cynic and told myself that it must pay big bucks over there in the government if some candidates are willing to murder or spend millions of money just to get a seat in the government. Mylotters, what is your opinion on this?

Having a lot of choices would be better than having none at all. Like in Las Piñas for instance, we have the same set of officials every elections, nothing changes. Villars hold the congressional seat, Aguilars hold the Mayoral seat and so on. What is bad about it? Las Piñas has not progressed in over a decade with them at the helm. Having a choice is better than having none at all.

I doubt. The difference with a product and a presidential candidate would be the frequency of which the approval of the market (consumers/voters) is needed. Products are enhanced so that they maintain their market, and hopefully gain market as time passes. The Presidency however requires it's market only once, the election. Since the Presidency does not allow re-election, he has no need for the voters after the elections. What he/she does is all up to him, there is no more competition. The country is stuck with him/her for 6 years. Which is why as much as it is good to have a choice, it is also important to use that choice wisely.

A good point. Really, dynasties do nothing but improve the influence of the family but barely the constituents. What are they doing there in their offices?, you sometimes wonder. Btw, what you said reminded me of how business works. You know how competition for market can make companies make their products better? Thus the more competition between the same products, the more the companies would strive to make their products better so that more people will buy their products. Thus, it is good for the consumers because they get quality products. I do wonder, however, if the same could be applied to presidential elections, or maybe any government seat. lol. Would this many choices create a certain competition between the presidentiables so that they develop better platforms, and hopefully, better governance of the Philippines?

Too many Presidential and even Vice-Presidential candidates indeed. Well the more the merrier so they say. It gave us many choices so that we will just have to choose the lesser evil. Of course no one of them is a perfect choice because all of them whether they accept it or not have selfish motive. All of them are hungry for power and all of them will most likely use their position to their advantage. But we've got to just choose the lesser evil as I said. Don't ever commit the mistake of the choosing the most evil one. Personnel, I think Erap should be eliminated. He has no more credibility to vie for Presidency. He is corrupt and has no brains. Villar? I am not voting for this man. He is a liar and a user. Worse he is using the poor a lot. Good reason for not voting Villar are stated here: http://hubpages.com/hub/notformannyvillar. I pray neither Erap nor Villar makes it. Anyone except the two of them. My God bless the Philippines!

Well said dear! I like that! So let us vote wisely and certainly it does not mean voting for Villar. I hope all Filipinos should know how to discern.

Well there are advantages as well as disadvantages for having many candidates. I guess with many you will have many choices and through that you can really filter and determine who really is deserving amongst them. While having too many might clutter votes because of these we would not have a majority president but only minority since votes will be distributed amongst that other candidates. I really do think that it is not the money they are after the position, since it only earns a little in getting there, but the power you will get from getting that position. Being the president of a country would mean you have access to almost every resources that an ordinary citizen would not be able to touch. You can virtually control the whole nation in building it or destroying it. So its the perks not the money actually that makes it attractive being on that seat.

Yes, legally you only earn a little there. But with power, you get to earn a lot. After all, money and power goes hand in hand. So yeah, I guess you've got a point there. You're right about only having a minority. Because in our present scenario, majority isn't really trustworthy especially with rampant vote buying and cheating.

In my opinion, the reason for having many candidates may be due to the fact that each candidate has their own style with regards to governing the country and it could be ho-hum to have only few fighting for the presidency. Additionally, having many candidates give way to intellectual debates that are profound and varied and these debates when shown by the media make a good example for the young generation who may wish someday to run as president. It only appear that the more the better cause when it is less its doubtfully effective.

You're probably right. Each candidate has certain areas that they want to concentrate on. It is now just a matter of good judgement if the said candidates really mean to accomplish all their promises properly when seated. And yes, the debates give light as to the beliefs, stands and plans of each candidate. Thus these debates can also help us choose which president to vote for. Just a sidenote, I wonder, you know, i remember one of the reasons why my mother voted for gma in the past. It was because she was intelligent, good in debates and gave speeches that were good. But look at what she's done with our country. Of course, I'm not blaming everything on her, but still, she is the most powerful person in the country. It seems she's not doing her job properly. On the other hand, now that they're many, it comes down to becoming a popularity vote. And of course, we all know that if you have the means, you can become the most popular individual in any given set.

While I'm reading your statement it seems that you are not a Filipino and never been in the Philippines. As for the question whether it is best for a country if it has a lot of choices when it comes to presidency, well it depends on a country's culture, values and beliefs as a whole. In the case of Philippines, yes I believe it is recommended because most voters here are not yet responsible in casting their votes. Can still be influenced by many election frauds and the likes. Can you imagine if we only have two candidates for president similar with that of the USA, chances are, if the other candidate is much wealthier and powerful over the other then that candidate can easily use the money factor to influence the decision of the voters.
