i do not really follow on what you mean by expansion but i assume you are looking for the meaning of the shortened VOIP. i believe it stands for voice over the internet protocol. sort of a standard set for communications to adopt for them to be used or understand by the internet standard. greetings. : )

VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. VoIP services convert your voice into a digital signal that travels over the Internet. If you are calling a regular phone number, the signal is converted to a regular telephone signal before it reaches the destination. VoIP can allow you to make a call directly from a computer, a special VoIP phone, or a traditional phone connected to a special adapter. In addition, wireless "hot spots" in locations such as airports, parks, and cafes allow you to connect to the Internet and may enable you to use VoIP service wirelessly.

What is VoIP? VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and is also alternatively known as Internet Telephony. VoIP allows you to make phone calls over your ISP (Internet Service Provider) connection, instead of your phone company, by sending voice (data) over the internet. How does VoIP work? Current telephone system relies on reliable but inefficient method for connecting calls called ‘Circuit’ Switching. When a call is made between two persons, a ‘circuit’ is established and the connection is maintained for the entire duration of the call with a dedicated wire connection between two persons. A long distance call costs high, because of the copper wire that connects all the way from one point to another.
