One of my dear friends has been worrying about having diabetes. Until a rotten doctor she has decides to explain, I read a good tip for snacks for diabetics.
I´ll copy-paste part of the text: "Walnuts are already in a heart-healthy league of their own because of their cholesterol-improving powers. And now a small new study suggests that eating walnuts every day may help give blood vessels a much needed tune-up in people with diabetes."
So, my dear friends, the answer is walnuts. I love all kinds of nuts. Maybe they are not the least expensive snacks, but they are filling. And just read all the wonders!. Lowers cholesterol. That´s a good one. Who has good cholesterol levels past certain age? I haven´t met a soul in that category.
and moreover, this extra tune-up.
Did you know about it? Are you willing to try it? Do you like walnuts? This post is dedicated to Jo but all other mylotters are welcome

So now we must make walnuts a must too?
I have no problems healthwise at the moment, except for being heavier than I should be since changing jobs and lifestyle six years ago. I love walnuts but they must be chopped up as my teeth can't cope with them. That's the next thing on my agends.
How often and how many are we to eat?

My teeth are not what they were either! I´ll have to become a beggar to be able to pay for all the extras I have. Shoulder, teeth... You name it, I have it. Most of my problems began when I quit smoking. After 2 years I´m still not sure I did the right thing.

Hiya marguicha,
Almonds are my favourites and peanuts but they are way too salty and also Chestnuts in small amounts. I like hazelnuts too almonds can be soaked overnight and in a food mixer thing you make them into almond milk in the morning they are supposed to be very good for a lot of things. I don´t care much for Sunflower Seeds Pipas they are way to dry for me but my Parrot used to love them (grin).

I have never eaten sunflower seeds although each time I read a book by a russian author I thought that I should try them. In my country we have almonds, peanuts and common nuts. The other types are quite expensive as they are imported.
I never thought that unsalted peanuts have too much salt but maybe they do. Still, nuts are wonderful and a great addition to salads too.

I often eat them for the protein, snack for me a diabetic for many years.
I have high blood pressure so do not eat anything with salt in it or on it.unsalted nuts means just what it says, why get in a knot over unsalted nuts?

Hi Marg,
I am a diabetic and walnuts are part of my diet. The trouble is they are also high in calories so it is best that only a small quantity is consumed at one time, but on a regular basis. As far as your friend is concerned she does not have to wait for her "rotten" doctor to explain. There is a ton of information on the internet about diabetes, there are menus, meal plans, foods good and bad for diabetics. I don't know about your country but the American and Canadian Diebetes Associations have websites with lots of information. Where I live we also have support groups, excercise groups, access to regular consultaions with a nurse and a dietician both trained and specialized in diabetes treatment. There are also regular sessions at a diabetes clinic at a hospital supported by a social worker, dietician and nurse. People can ask questions in a group setting and make appointments for individual counselling. Your friend should check into what is available.

She is american (met her here, at mylot)and her doctor said she "might have" diabetes and then did not show up anymore. In my country we have all you mention plus free attention for people without means. They even give their pills free (which are not so expensive anyway). I thought American medicine was wonderful until I started mylotting. It seems the good medicine is not available to everyone. I have heard here about work at home moms who don´t have enough for medical insurance in this resesion. Of course I don´t know more than what people tell me, but it seems nothing is as good as you see at TV shows. Take care!

You are making me work, Jo! You are like my fav cousin. I make a nice meal and he says this or that is bad for something he has. So I go to Googgle and change to another food the next week. Same thing hppens as I hit another one of his thousand illness. Besides being picky, he looks fine, completly healthy and always eats two servings of desserts. THAT gives him no problem. Sounds fishy to me!(I´m putting onion and garlic hidden in little dosis to show him it´s just he doesn´t know how to eat)
There´s another answer (scroll down) that says bitter watermelon will help diabetes AND excess uric acid. I don´t know what bitter watermelon is. Watermelons in my country are all sweet.
A big HUG!!!

You would never be a pain, dearest Jo. I am not picky at eating either, unfortunatly. I´d be a beauty and no back pain at all if I didn´t like EVERYTHING. Yesterday I made lentils and they were out of this world. I put grated parmesan cheese on top. Legumes are good for a lot of things, now that I think of it. The only problem is that Most of the time I will eat seconds.

I didn't know that! I'm not a diabetic, but I know a lot of diabetics. From them I heard that there are ice creams specially made for diabetics, and that it tastes good. I haven't tried it, but it looks like a nice option too

My husband was a diabeticfor the last 10 years of his life. I f you like to cook, there are many good things to eat that diabetics can eat. And there are many sweeteners to use instead of sugar so that they can enjoy a dessert too. I´m trying to make up nice desserts that can me shed some extra pounds. I discovered this one: a slice of uncooked, unsweetened, ripe pineapple, fiber cereal (no sugar) mixed with fresh diced plums. To the oven until warm. YUMMY!!! and very light.

That's great to hear! Many people associate being diabetic with having to give up a lot of food, but fortunately there are many products that diabetics can enjoy to have a yummy life

Thanks for that. I have family members who are also diabetic. But walnut is not readily available here in the Philippines. Maybe I should check it out in "high class imported products stores" here if they sell walnut. Thanks and Happy MyLotting! :)

I love nuts also. All kinds of nuts! If this was the newest study I believe it. I will recommend this to my patients. On one hand, walnuts can increase your uric acid that can make a person prone to gouty arthritis. I suggest, if you have diabetes, take bitter watermelon. It works. You can plant this in your backyard. It really would lower down you blood sugar. =)

The uric acid problem makes my friend not be able to follow my tip. But I told her to scroll up and read your andwer. I don´t know about bitter watermelon though. We only have the sweet one in my country.
