Hi friends,
I am new at reading King and I need some help. Among all Stephen King books which ones would you definitely recommend for me to read. Which one is the scarriest, sickest and probably the most terrifying among all novels and short stories? And also, would you recommend from where to buy Dark Tower part 1, because I can't find it anywhere in the bookstores I went to.
Thanks!

I love Stephen King! I could recommend a ton of his books! lol
I really liked The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. It was just expertly written (obviously lol) and a really odd/creepy story.
Eye of the Dragon was good. Kind of different for Kind (I think) but still good!
Rose Madder was awesome! Mixed horror in the normal life with horror of another fantasy world.
Misery is a classic. Very creepy villian and graphic descriptions. One scene in it, I couldn't sleep after reading it! I think I laid with the covers over my head! lol
He has a few books that are collections of short stories (Night Shift, Everything's Eventual, Just After Sunset) and in these collections there are some I really liked (The Gingerbread Girl in Just After Sunset) and others that just seemed to drag on. But each of those collections had good stories that are worth reading.
You should be able to find the dark tower series in Borders or Barnes and Nobles, that's where I found all mine. I think I'm on the 5th book in the series, but I'm taking a break from it for a while and reading other authors for now.

I guess I could mention one story that I didn't like, because you said you wanted the sickest one! lol
Gerard's Game...I did not like this story--it was EXTREMELY disturbing, disgusting, scary...so you may like it lol. Nothing wrong with the way it was written, it's not a bad book-I just didn't like it.

Wow! You seemed to be somebody I could relate with regarding Stephen King stories, LilyoftheThorns. Although I must admit that it has been more than a year, I guess, since I last read another Stephen King story, but back then I spent so much time reading a lot of his books. When did you start reading his works? Are you still reading now?

I started reading his books, probably, about 6-8 years ago--and yes I'm still reading and loving! :) lol
WHICH REMINDS ME! I forgot a big one! King's newest book, Under the Dome, was AWESOME. That is a MUST read and I really hope they make it into a movie. But it has to be done right--I want it to be a big budget, well done movie and I would be the happiest person ever! lol

I have to say "The Body" which is a short story apart of the novel "Different Seasons" which includes 3 other stories of Kings. these are all none horror stories. The Body was also made into a movie..which happens to be my favourite movie Stand By Me. If you like the book I recommend seeing the movie as well.

Start with 'The Shining',which has become a true Classic and remains a great, very scary read. 'Pet Semetary' is probably the overall creepiest book he has done and will really haunt you after reading. 'Salem's Lot' is an overlooked King book which is well done and will not fail to keep you up late and will make you check your doors and windows twice before you do finally go to sleep.
These three early King books represent three basic literary archetypes:ghosts, zombies and vampires and he definitely doesnt disappoint.
Check Amazon for 'The Dark Tower' and get 'The Gunslinger' as well to get some history behind the Tower series.

I really like Cell. Haven't read all King's books but Cell is among the best I've read. I recommend buying the book online, just go to the websites of the biggest bookstores in your country. The selection in the websites is a lot better since space isn't a problem there. If none of your country's bookstores have it, try amazon or ebay, at least they do :D

I would say if your looking for a gruesome book by Stephen King I would tell you to read "Pet Cematary" it is by far one of his best pieces of work. If you have seen the movie it is good too, but the book is better. I would say get online and look for the Dark Tower 1 on Amazon.com.

In terms of being the scariest, I would recommend The Shining. Even though I saw the movie and the mini-series before reading the book, I read the book when I was alone at night and was pretty creeped out by it. There is a simultaneous sense of Jack Torrence's descent into insanity and the hotel's ascent to power over him, leading to ultimate destruction and horror. I'm a huge fan of the more old-school Gothic genre, but The Shining really made me appreciate more modern horror novels.
IT is also good. Really long and a bit tedious in parts, but it's not too shabby. As for a short story, "The Boogeyman" is all right.
If you're interested in some of his lesser-known, now-cult classics, Kingdom Hospital (a TV show made in 2004) is amazing. It was adapted by King from Lars von Trier's The Kingdom, a Danish televised mini-series. There is a book, The Journals of Eleanor Druse, that was created after Kingdom Hospital aired. It's a good addition to the series, and I liked reading it.
Rose Red is also one of the best King creations I've come across. It's another mini-series. I would recommend watching it and then reading The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer (to which there is also a movie); it is a prequel to Rose Red.
Other good works by King, in my opinion, include The Tommyknockers, Carrie, and Misery.

I read several books of Stephen King, which is my favorite author! It's difficult recommend just ONE of his book. My favorite is "IT" with no doubt, but the last one I read,a few months ago,is "The Dome".King is a genius. He has a kind of imagination never seen(or read) before!
Also,I loved "Pet Semetary" and "Dolores Claiborne" but, yes, I absolutely recommend "The Dome"..
