advice about a girl and best friend situation needed

Hi friends, I knew this girl from maybe 4-5 years, we've been going out and talking and having a really great time together. I wasn't sure if I wanted her as my girlfriend, I had several relationships, and so had she, that didn't intervene with our meetings. However, everytime one of us broke up with our lovers, we got these strange vibe from each other, we barely kissed one or two times, but in the last moment one of us decided it is not fair for our lovers. Last year, however I introduced her to my best friend, and things being to unveil in the following direction: I introduced him, because he saw a photo of us and kept on asking to introduce him to her. I never suspected a foul play, he's my best friend, so I did introduce them. In the beginning, we went out the three of us, had fun, but then I went for a summer vacation away. I'd left my friend a digital camera, because we were working on a project together, and instead of helping, later on i receive an e-mail from my girlfriend with pictures of them. He didn't bother helping at all. They formed something of a couple, and she was still seeing someone. Later on, I returned from my summer vacation and they greeted me as they were couple. I felt mad at both of them, but mostly towards my friend. He later would tell me he had deep feelings for her, so I let it go. I told him he could be with her. But strangely, I and the girl met in the winter vacation, and she told me she broke up with her boyfriend and needed to see me. We spent couple of hours together, then I said I'll take off and we had this moment when I felt she wanted me to kiss her. I stared at her for a few seconds and I was confused, but I decided not to. Later on, my best friend and her had a fight, because two days after the things between us happened she had a new boyfriend (neither of us) and now they don't speak to each other. I keep on having these second thoughts about all this, tell me if you think what I did was right or not..
