Computer Hardware Disposal

When you have a PC, you certainly get to a point where some part breaks down and you replace it with a new part. Or sometimes, you wanna upgrade and of course, replace some parts. Now the question is this, how would you dispose of the computer hardware? I don't think I can just shoot it down the trash bin. Don't computer hardware have certain metals that should be disposed of properly? Is there like an institution or place where you can probably sell such like broken printers, Ram chips, lan cards, etc, and they would get rid of it or recycle in properly?
