Ok the definition of Mentoring is a wise and trusted counselor or teacher. How are earth could they have Miley Cyrus age 17 mentoring the American Idol contestants? This makes not a bit of sense to me and it just makes me feel the show is going down the wrong path fast.

I think she's too young to be a mentor, myself. I haven't watched American Idol in a long time but I would think most of the contestants would be around her age or a little older. I would think they would need a mentor who is a little older. Miley has had some experience but not enough to be a mentor, in my opinion. It doesn't make any sense to me, either, and I'm sure she gets a lot of help from her father, Billy Ray. I'm a big fan of his, lol! Kathy.

I like Miley, too, btw, but like I said, I think she's a little too young to be a mentor. I used to be in Billy Ray's fan club and I went to the fan club picnic in 2000. I got to meet Miley and her half-brother, Trace, at the picnic. Miley was just 7 years old at the time. Note my username is "cyrus". I tried every username I could think of when I joined mylot but every one I tried had been taken. When I came up with cyrus, it was accepted. I also named my horse in this picture "Cyrus" after Billy Ray, lol. Kathy.

I use to be a fan of Billy Ray's too but once his daughter got into the picture I lost interest for some reason.

Miley Cyrus is a great singer.. but I think with this mentoring thing, they are trying to bring up the ratings, like one responder has said.. I think that makes sense there. With the exit of Paula, there might be a dip for all we know.. so ratings must be back up. If I'm right about this though..

You must be a young mylotter and that is why you find Miley a great singer. Still in all a mentor is someone older who has been around for awhile who has respect and experience within the industry.

I liked Miley Cyrus on the Disney channel, and I really thought she would turn in to a good role model.
However last night was the first time I've seen her where she wasn't acting and I gotta say - she's nowhere near ready to Mentor anyone. Just b/c you sell a lot of records doesn't mean you have enough experience to tell others what to do. Her advice was always so basic and something ANY of us would say. Plus, I thought she wasn't that good at talking on her feet.
She is young, I still have hope she'll be a good role model, we'll see :)
Ok some commented that she was a good Mentor b/c she is current and not like the old outdated people they usually have. Howevere, there are plenty of "current" artist they could have picked that have more years of experience.
Who's next? Britney Spears?

I haven't really been watching American Idol anymore but when I heard about this I just had to laugh. Exactly what is this show coming too? I mean I admit that I do listen to Miley's music every once in a while but I thought that when it comes to bringing mentors it was all about people that have been in the business for a long time and have had a lot of hit songs. People like Prince or Barry Manilow. I just don't understand but I guess they are trying to bring in the younger viewers because now everything is about the ratings.

Exactly older people with experience who have been around for awhile, not a 17 year old who is younger then most of the contestants.

I think we are been a little too critical about Miley Cyrus, yes she is young however she have achieve a lot more that many of us have done. The youth of today have grown up too fast and age really might just be a number. I would not put her down before I see her in action, she might just surprise us and rise to the occasion.

Well I just don't like her I can't even stand hearing her speak let alone sing. She has no business giving advice to these contestants in my opinion. I bet they were disappointed thinking what great star was coming to mentor and in walks Miley. We are all entitled to our own opinions and we all like different people. I guess its the younger generation that will like her and the older generation maybe not. Then again I love Lady Gaga.

Agreed! This show has been heading down the wrong path for quite some time now. Ridiculous! I just posted on my blog about this. http://www.reality-tv-junkie.com/ UGH! I like Miley Cyrus but give me a break.

I think since she's been there done that the young people would probably relate to her more than they would some others. Seems as she is pretty popular w/them.

she can teach them how to be immature, stupid and a ho.. i mean seriously she cant be a role model for anyone.. shes had so many slip up with her pics getting out and shes dating way older men when she isnt even grown and i dont know it just bothers me to see anyone think that she could teach or guide some one when shes a train wreck herself.. a small train wreck but thats just because she isnt 18 yet lol.. plus she wouldnt even be anyone without her dad so i would rather have some one be a mentor that came from nothing and made themselves something and its an adult with a decent rep... no one is perfect but unfortunately kids still look up to people.. i doubt the show will last more than one season after simon is gone

I think they used her because she has achieved so much at a very young age; I think they wanted to prove to them that anything was possible and as we know she is a very talented girl

is she hadnt been a famous persons kid then maybe i could respect how much she has accomplished but she got a good head start being who she is.. i think it would be more appropriate if some one came from NOTHING and fought through everything to gain the status they have now.. now some one that had an easy ride

Yeah that was funny I tape Idol so I just skipped her parts. There is nothing she could add to help these kids. I will also be skipping her performance I can't stand her voice. I didn't care for The Rolling Stones week either not a fan of theirs. Hopefully we will get better mentors later in the season.

After Paige sang my satalite went out and it didn't come back on till Casey started to sing. So since I didn't see Mike or Crystal perform I can't say I see any type of smuggness. Crystal was questioned about this last week. They said if you feel like this is yours. She said no way. This is up for graps and anything could happen. I just think with Crystal she is a natural and it comes off that she has so much confidence it might seem like she is being smug. I have to check her out next time. I seriously think it will be her or Siobhan to win.

I know what you mean I don't even like Miley's speaking voice let alone her singing voice. I too was not thrilled with Rolling Stones week. I hope things pick up soon on this show because I'm getting so bored.

I still love Simon and the judges. Ellen is getting better each week it would be nice if the kids were. LOL. Yes very boring and is it just me but does Big Mike and Crystal seem smug now. Yes they can both sing but there is a aura around them that they are better than everyone else. It is just coming across that way to me when I watch the show.

I was also shocked when I read in an article before the show last week that Miley Cyrus was going to be the 1st celebrity mentor in Idol this season. Like, I don't think she has that credibility that other veterans in singing have in order to qualify to be a mentor to the contestants. And it showed. Most of the performances last week were not good. Maybe because they did not get the right advice they had to get from their mentor. And also, I did not get the connection between their theme and having Miley as the mentor. I did not work for me.
I guess it's a strategy also of the network to invite and use young celebrities to the show to raise their ratings. I just hope next time they'll bring in credible and tried-and-tested mentors to the show.

I hope so too. I wonder what Simon thought of this pick for a mentor.

I just finished watching the show...Miley didn't do bad, but I wasn't impressed either. She told Andrew to lose the guitar (but it didn't help his performance). She told Didi, everyone gets nervous before a performance that seemed to help Didi, but her performance wasn't great. She told Paige to watch her pitch; she didn't and her performance was awful. What else can someone tell some of these contestants? (Some of them were just plain awful tonight. I had to fast-forward through a couple.)

Yes Paige was really bad. However, I thought Didi was better then she has been. I'm just getting tried of Simon not having a nice thing to say about anyone. I still think it will come down to Crystal and Sioblan. I think the problem is the song that they are picking. Maybe the mentor should be helping out in this area too, and the mentor needs to be someone older with more experience.

I think Simon's getting frustrated that a "star" hasn't stepped forward by now. I know I'm getting impatient. I think you nailed one and two. I think, just because little girls vote and people like me don't, one of the boys will be in the top three...Mike, Aaron or Lee...along with Crystal and Shioblan (I never can spell her name right).
