Does your dog prefer certain types of people?

Our dog came from a shelter and we don't know much about the first year of his life except that it wasn't very happy. He can be quite timid and nervous but he's very sweet natured. He doesn't like men with deep or loud voices. I suspect something happened to him in the past that makes him wary of such people. He also prefers women to men in general and we always ask for a female vet when we have to take him to the vets. He might growl at a male vet but for a female one he'll roll over and have a fuss. Do you have a dog that seems to prefer a gender or type of person?

My fur baby - Look at that face, how can u not love him!!
I know where my dog comes from. My sister in law's boyfriend has a farm and he rents some land and the people had Labrador puppies. My sister in law picked the smaller one as I had never had a dog before and I was afraid of them. We got him he was 6 wks old. He spent one night in the barn. It was a long drive home and he was sick just as we got home. He's a shy dog and since he's always home with me, he's not used to see other dogs OR people. He seems to prefer men. Will sit at their feet or rub against them like a cat would do (not sure why but!!). There was only one man he didnt seem to like and he wouldnt go near him. He would stand between that man and me. I guess he would protect me but he never had to do so and Im not even sure he would. So, sorry for long post but he prefers men!!

Dogs go by smell. Don't ask me what smells they like and ones they don't. They also can 'smell fear' and different things that deter their accepting some. the best dog I ever had was a Blue Heeler and he hated uniformed people. He went to doggie jail more that once for biting the mail man!

I have an 8 year old mixed breed dog that I got from a shelter 3 years ago. He was terrified when I got him. For 2 days he would hide from everyone but, me. He had clearly been abused or mistreated before being dumped at the shelter. After the first couple days, he quit hiding so much but, was still very skittish and terrified of the smallest sound. He had a major issue with men. If there was any man around at all, he was hiding. He wanted nothing to do with men at all and refused to come out around them. He would be perfectly content laying at my feet or playing with the kids and my ex would walk in and the dog would go hide and not come out until after everyone except me was in bed. As I said, we have had him for 3 years now. He is now a much more friendly dog. He is tolerant of men and no longer hides when they are around. He is still somewhat skittish, but this is only when something traumatic happens. One thing that he is still terrified of is thunderstorms. He will climb in my bed and nudge me until I lift the blankets up so that he can hide under them whenever it is thundering or lightning.

We got our dog through my sister's friend's mother's friend's neighbor's friend. So we didn't really know much about his past. The one thing he didn't like was red hair. We never saw him act friendly to a red head. It was weird. Other people he would bark at, as he'd get a bit territorial. He adored my grandmother.... she's the one who was able to get him to go in his pen on command. We ended up giving him away, as my parents didn't have enough time to take good care of him while my sister and I were away at college. He's with a family with three other Shih Tzus now. I don't know if he still doesn't like red heads, though....

My dog loves everyone however we got burgled once. My dog saw them and now when he sees someone of the same race as the burglars, that is tall and wearing a hat (they were tall and wore balaclavas) he goes nuts. Otherwise he doesn't mind people. I've seen dogs in the past that prefer women to men and it has been that they suffered abuse at the hands of men.

My female dog prefer to play with children. She does not mind whether they are boys or girls. She wants to play with them and jump on them. She does not have a pariticular preference when it comes to gender however I do notice that she is more friendly towards women.

Hi Hvedra, I do have your same suspicions. He might have been kept by an abusive man and beat him that's why he is afraid of men with deep or loud voice. I do admire you for going for a dog from shelter because you have saved a dog's life. I think it is a good idea to take him to a female vet instead of men. Maybe an dog behaviourist can teach you how to deal with this issue. I think that with a little effort your dog's behavioiur can be improved a lot.

My dog likes every one in our house, he love my brother and sister. When my relative come (he already know) he will tread him nice, wagging that tail. Because my dog is a half German Shepard Dog he can sense if we don't like someone and he will bark loudly to that person.

Our dog just seems to love everyone. She does bark at new people when they walk by our property but once you give her a pat on the head she becomes your best friend. However, she does seem much more responsive to my commands more than those of my husbands, but I think she just instinctively knows who the boss is around here. LOL!
