How miserable do you want to be?

It has often been said that we can make ourselves as happy or as miserable as we want to be. While there are many who won't agree with this, we have all known people who are happy despite living under very difficult circumstances while others complain and make themselves miserable over very minor incidents. This seems to show that there is at least a degree of truth in the statement. Are some of us mentally lazy or are we just looking for sympathy? Does it take a special type of person to be happy regardless of their situation in life?

It really depends on the individual because simple people can be happy with less than extravagant people.

I don't want to be miserable. I am not miserable. I am the type of person who is optimistic. I always try to see the positive side of the situation. This will make me happy and not miserable. I don't have a perfect life, actually I have lots of problems to deal with but it does not make me miserable. Being miserable will not solve the problem, of course being happy will not solve it either. But, having a happy outlook will make things lighter. Having to wake up everyday in our life is already a reason to be happy. We don't need to be special type of person to be happy. We just need to decide that we have to be happy, because it would be better. Smiling uses less muscles than frowning. So, let's relax and don't be stress too much, it will just harm our health. Be happy

Yes, happiness is no more than a choice. I am always happy!! Do I ever have a bad day???? Hmmm??? Let me think. We all have the power to choose what we deem important in our lives. If I were to have a bad day, it wouldn't be important enough to mention. Ah, but let me tell you of the wonderful, glorious good days. Spring is here. Soon the flowers will be everywhere. Nature and all it's beauty smile on us.There are great people everywhere changing the world for the better in their own way. Can you see now???? Shine your light as only you can. How can you ever think you aren't happy. SMILE!!!!!

In my holidays abroad I have met poor and rich people in my life. Some of them were happy others were not. Happiness does not depend on your financial situation. I've met poor people with a smile on their face, showing your respect and politeness despite that they are finding it difficult to earn a living. I have met poor people who curse their luck and live a life of misery. I have mixed with influential rich persons, whose mobile rings every minute as if the world depended on them. Yet they are not happy they are greedy, they want more, and they don't have time for themselves or their family. They are unhappy too but I met rich people who despite their wealth they are humble and they do a lot of charity work (not only giving money) without blowing any trumpets.

Hi ronald, Thank you for your response and I have seen the same in my lifetime. One can be rich and happy or one can be poor and happy. I know people who have to endure a lot of pain everyday and yet manage to remain happy. These are probably the people that I admire the most. Blessings.

Should people be classified as "Happy," or "Miserable!" I disagree- Studies indicate that depressed individuals have more realistic views than non-depressed people. Depressed individuals are much less likely than normal individuals to exhibit reality distorting, self-serving biases. In fact, Depressed individuals: Will not exaggerate how competent and well liked they are. Remember positive and negative experiences equally. Accept responsibility for both successes and failures. Are less vulnerable to the illusion of control. Have realistic views of the future. The depressive distributional style: Depressed people frequently have a depressive distributional style which over exaggerates negative consequences, places blame solely on the individual, and believe a failure in one area of competence can affect behavior in other areas. Perhaps the world needs more depressed, but honest People!

Hi barehugs, Thanks for that interesting response, I have to say that I've never looked at it in that light before. In actual fact I wasn't thinking so much about being depressed as I was about people never being satisfied. I was also think of the way some people live with pain. I have two good friends who are in almost constant pain but yet they appear happy and will only mention their illness if asked about it. Others, including myself, sometimes complain about the slightest pain. Blessings
