All the time we see the word http followed by the // appear when we type the name of a website or when a web site opens. What is this http//and who invented this one? Also I can't understand the use of http//.To me it appears that it is redundant and can be disposed off easily. What do you think?Share your views please.

HTTP - Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
It is request standard typical of client-server computing. It is a way of communication between machines in a server-client style connection.

As several members have already stated, HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol, which is the language that the websites are wriiten in.
This is certainly not redundant and plays a major part in the process. If you have web space and transfer files from your computer to the online server then you will use FTP which is File Transfer Protocol. In this case the prefix FTP// will appear in the URL instead. It is important for the browser to know whether to display the files as icons or to read their instructions and display a webpage.

It means - Hypertext Transfer Protocol
It is a data transfer protocol or rule or guideline - the Web's communication standard.
You need not put http everytime when you type a site url. That will be automatically syndicated by the browser.
Hope this helps
