I planted potatoes yesterday, first day of Spring planting for me. Those old muscles don't get exercised in Yoga, only with work that involves a hoe and a pair of gloves. I woke up this morning so sore I could hardly move, my first thought was couldn't I just get potatoes at the market. Will you be planting or just go to the farmers market for fresh vegies this year?

I'm going to try my hand at potatoes this year. As I understand it, you just plant a piece of potato with an eye in it and keep it covered with dirt, right? I prefer to grow my own food when I can, although I do go to the Farmer's market for some items.

I usually plant a good part of the potatoe, at most I quarter the pones I'm going to plant. the new plant gets it's first boost from the part of the potatoe it's attached to.

We are going to plant tomatoes and peppers. I'm not sure what all else I will try to plant but I have always wanted strawberries. I have some room for a pretty decent garden so who knows what I will end up with. I have been wanting to try a big garden for a while now.

I expect we'll be doing both. We didn't have much room for veggies at our last house but we usually had runner beans up near the fence, and sometimes lettuce and tomatoes in grow bags, and we planted a few potatoes in pots. Now we have a nice verggie plot that is nearly ready for planting.

I hope to grow more this year than I did last. I had some good tomatoes and a variety of peppers as well. I have yet to get my Michigan/Rhode Island husband to realize that in Kansas you plant in March and April, and sometimes May, you do not have to wait for June and July. I always grow tomatoes. I have not grown potatoes in years. I will of course plant a variety of peppers. I hope to have summer and winter varieties of squash, and possibly melons. We will have to see.

I have tried to do some vegetable gardening but I end up having blisters in my hands even though I wore gloves. Not only that my whole body was aching which made me uncomfortable for days. I rather buy fresh vegetables in the wet market than torturing myself.

Hi savypat, I don't have a place for planting now, even if wanted to do it, but I remember well when my parents grew enough potatoes and often other vegetables to last all year. My brothers sisters and I were all expected to help when we were not in school. I think I would give it a try today if I had the opportunity. Blessings.

hie savypat, i do both. some i plant and fresh from the garden. the others i buy from the wet market or supermarkets like tesco, jusco, cold storage and giants in my country. the ones i planted are sweet bassils, peppermint, lemon grass, spring onions, chives, wild pepper, limes, ginger, and curry leaves. i have to buy other vegetables like cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes etc. well i suppose most of us have some on our own and some we go out to buy. cheerio, savypat.

My father also plants vegetables in my hometown. They are organically grown and its really good to eat them cause you know they are safe from pesticides. I am also planning yo have a garden when I would have the time to do it. I dont have a big space for a garden in my home now so I was thinking of planting the vegetables in a flower pot. I am really excited about it cause I think its also a good way to save money cause you can just get some vegetables from your garden instead of buying it in the market.

Haha your post reminded me of the one and only time that I attempted to plant a potato. After doing spring cleaning we discovered that there was like a months-old potato starting to grow leaves already at the back of our refrigerator. Decided to plant it in an empty lot near our house, went on vacation, and upon return we couldn't locate where the potato was anymore as the lot had become overgrown with weeds. I have my own little vegetable garden, nothing fancy, just tomatoes, string beans, eggplant, depends on what's in season. My next project will be a herb garden, just couldn't find the time to get around to it..

Eating fresh vegetables is good because they have more nutrients. I couldn't go to the market every single day just to buy fresh vegetables. That's why i would really like to plant my own vegetables, sadly, we don't have enough space in our backyard. *sigh*

Mostly going to the market and the farmer's market and having "farm fresh to you" delivered...
