Have you or would you ever use a Life Coach?

I'm considering becoming a life coach sometime in the next few years. Have you heard of life coaches? I love the idea. They are people you hire to help you achieve something in any area of your life, or to help you improve in EVERY area of your life.
A life coach helps you define goals, find the shortest possible route to achieve them, listens, makes suggestions, and cheers you on when you need it. A life coach is for someone who just needs a partner to help them stay motivated at times. Oftentimes successful people choose to use the services of a life coach to enhance their success or take them to the next level.
What do you think? Do you have any experience with this? Does it sound good to you? Thanks!

I've heard of it, and have always been interested in it...however I don't know how to get started in it!
Currently, I have my BA in Psychology with a Minor in Human Development and Family studies as well as my masters in professional and school counseling. I know that i'm qualified...but I don't see those in the midwest (where I live) wanting a life coach, I see that as a big city (new york, CA, Seattle) kinda thing.
Good question.

Thanks for your response! There seem to be a lot of coaching schools cropping up these days. It sounds like you have a good background for it. I, too, am from the midwest, so I know what you are talking about. However, the cool thing about coaching is that a lot of it is done via telephone, so you theoretically could have clients anywhere.
Here are some links, if you are interested

And my favorite potential school so far, CoachU

If you search coaching, I'm sure you'll find tons more sites. I'm not sure when or if I'll be able to do the training and start a practice. I have to see how life goes the next couple of years. Good luck to you!

ps--where are you in the Midwest? I was in Milwaukee, WI. We are now in Olympia, WA--a couple hours south of Seattle.

I live outside STL, MO. I have done searches online for trainings, but for me, I'd perfer to get my training at a university. Something just seems fishy about getting it online... However, I can say that I've been doing reseach on the saleries, and if I could really be sucessful at it, it would allow me to stay home with my future children and work part time as a life coach.
Have you heard of Keen? I just saw something on Keen last night on this board...what do you think of that?

it sounds like a good idea. maybe some would actually need one, but for a person to actually admit that he or she needs a life coach must be really humble. i mean, if you needed a life coach, wouldn't that mean like you're a loser of some sort? just a thought.
seriously, i think being a life coach is a good thing--it's like helping people out who need fguidance. but you get paid for it.

Oh no, I think it's quite the opposite of meaning that person is a loser. It's like if you got a personal trainer for working out. It wouldn't mean you are a loser (unless you're losing weight--ha ha!) A lot of really successful people use coaches and corporations employ them to make their teams more effective too. Also, of course, sports teams have ALWAYS used coaches. I can see how you might think the other way, but I haven't seen that being the case at all. Thanks for your response!

never heard of the practice before. Is it catching on?

It is relatively new, but I think it will begin to catch on more and more. Seems like it is. There are some reality shows out there that use coaches, in positive ways I think. (when I think reality show, I immediately think negative drama, but they aren't all that way.)
Gracepub actually just wrote a post about it not too long ago. http://www.writingup.com/gracepub/my_new_life_coach I hope coaching will really be viewed as a positive thing. That we all need a little support now and then, even and especially successful people can use someone to bounce ideas off and keep them on track. Also, I like that life coaches are meant to focus on the now and the future in helping you achieve your dreams. It's nice to have someone in your corner, imho!

Awesome! Would you like to share more about your training or practice? What do you like best/least, etc.? Are you able to make a living at it?

I have considered becoming one since I have undergraduate studies in Psychology; but when I looked into it, there is a considerable cost to it and I had to think about this. I am still interested, but more so planning for it.
