Well, Chris Carter said that it was time to stop the show because the world has become different and viewers were becoming interested in other genres/stories. That was what he said in an interview. As much as I love The X-Files, Chris Carter really knows the show's audience and really ended the show at its peak which is really great.
We were lead to believe that the show was cancelled but in fact they still had at least 1 season but Chris Carter decided it was time to end the show. So much unanswered questions but this show is one of the best ever. I miss it so much! :)
I am really glad that the new generation are watching this show as well. :)
The Legacy continues!

I believe it was due to the ratings, they struggled to capture the viewers as they seemed to repeat story-line's quite often. They also had the habit of bringing back Mulder which tended to be around the same story each time, with a few changes here and there.
Personally I think they should of stuck to mixing it up and trying to keep the stories based on similar to true events.

Okay...a minute to think...:D
The US governament demanded they stopped to continue the X-Files because Mulder and Scully got too close to the truth in the series. Chris Carter got confidential dossies and from that he was inspired to write the serie with hidden messages, that's why he also had to stop working in this area.
Or in the series there were real footage of inside the Area 51, they couldn't believe it so again, the governament demanded the serie to end.
Lol
How much I miss X-File. I was watching season 5 few days ago, actually.
Cheers!

I loved this show. I hope they continue making X-Files movies, even if they are not that good. At least it's a way for us to get updates from Mulder and Scully.
As for the reason why they stopped the show... Chris Carter (the creator of the series) was hired by the US government as a consultant for the Department of Defense, specializing on managing confidential data and releasing fictional press releases.
