Should I change my Avatar?

I am thinking of changing my avatar as the picture I have here is over 3 years old.
I am aware of branding yourself online, so I have the same username in all of the sites I go to and mostly use this same old picture.
On some sites, such as Facebook I have updated to a more modern one in recent times and I am wondering if I should do the same here.
What to you think my friends?
Will you still recognise me if I change it?
Do you update your photo regularly or have you kept the same old photo all this time that you have been here?

I have kept my lovely blue dragon since I joined MyLot and have no plans to change him. I wouldn't want to put a photograph of myself up here, I don't take a good picture - lol

That is great that you have a picture that you are happy to use always. It must have great sentimental value to you!
Lots of people share the view that they do not take a good picture. I do not like to look at myself in pictures much and hate the sound of my voice on video!

I'd like to see a current photo. If someone is going to use a photo of themselves as an avatar, I'm assuming they want people to see the person with whom they are discussing. I think the right thing to do is to use a photo of whom you are now. Of course, if you use a baby photo or something similarly definitive then the meaning of the avatar changes entirely.
I prefer not to use my photograph.

Hi MsTickle. Thanks for your praise of my new avatar here.
I think they should be updated to represent what people look like now too if they have a photo of themselves. I prefer to have a picture of myself so that I can be totally open with people online who I am. But I also respect peoples decision to remain private and have another picture instead.
I like yours as it stands out and gives an impression of happiness. It is always good to see a smiling face, whether it is real or a cartoon.

I liked your new photo and I think, you will be recognised no matter what. I do change in between on request but then being a nostalgic person I keep coming back to the original.

Yeah, it all depends on the frame of mind at that point in time. This is a cool avatar!

I am glad you like my new photo. I may end up back at it from time to time, or I may stay with this one for years. Who knows?
I think it is good that you can keep going back to your original avatar if it means something to you and people recognise it as being you.

Hey, I noticed you changed your avatar!! nice one!! I was going to say in this discussion that you should...I try to update mine every so often but it's a matter of finding a decent pic of myself...It's also about time I changed my avatar here lol.. I will still recognise you - mainly by your userid until I get used to your new avatar :)

I saw some really nice old Hot Rods the other day with wedding bands across the front of them. They were awesome wedding cars. Much nicer than the 4WD I used!

Thanks Moonchild. Most people thought that I should, so I did. I was probably going to anyway, but I just wanted to see what people thought about how often to change them.
I like yours as it is a very cool car. I would also remember you as your username is very unique. The au in particular stands out to me as an Aussie!

I think you should post your new photo in this discussion to see if we recognise you. Looking forward to seeing your red mohawk =o)

I am not too worried if people do not recognise me at first as people here are very intelligent, (mostly ) and will be able to work out who I am.
Welcome to MyLot. I hope that you will have an enjoyable time here.

i love to change my avatar but not everyday. only if i feel i need to, to suit the mood i have or the weather in here. i am not particular in avatars but with the name and the personality of the user.

Changing every day would be a bit radical.
Do you think usernames sum up users better than their avatars do?
I guess that depends on the person and what they choose for names and pictures.

I am late in responding as usual and I see that you’ve already changed your avatar. I like the new one, you can see your face better. This is my second avatar and I don’t feel like changing it just yet, I probably will when I come across a picture that I like. It is refreshing to have a change every now and again. I have photos of myself on other sites but the cat is unique to MyLot and I like that.

Thanks Paula. That is one thing that I did not like about the old one, the fact that it was side on. The photo was originally taken to show how big the apple was as it was the biggest that we had ever seen!
I think your avatar is great as it shows your love of cats and matches you that way. My new one suits my love of nature, the beach and amazing scenery.

I do not think we are friends here, and I do not recall following any of your posts. However it is generally accepted that you should keep your portrait up to date. For some reason people, more on dating sites though, people get irate over outdated pictures.
The avatars here on myLot are quite small unfortunately, someone should ask to have them a little larger. They seem so tiny on the new big screen monitors available now.
I do not have my pic here but do on Facebook and another site I post to and I am due for another self portrait.

I always like to have a real photo of the real me. No offence to the people that choose to have other things like yourself, but I just feel it is more honest to do so. Some obviously do not like to give too much detail about themselves online though, which is fair enough.
I do not recall seeing you here before either. I am always finding new people on here all the time. It is good. Thanks for dropping by!

Hi rawbill, that's ok. It make's you recognize by others by just looking at your picture. Its not bad at all because its like a company logo. Changing it may confuse others at first, but it would just be fine if you do so.
I also change the pictures I have on my profiles on different social sites so as to update others how I look lols.

Thanks for sharing your views doncruise. I really like your avatar. It is awesome with the different angle from the ground and with the nice blue sky and the tree included. It gives the appearance that you are a happy outdoors type of person!

I haven't changed my avatar just because I am too lazy to do so . Avatars describe yourself, so if you're going to feel more confortable using a new one, go for it! You will keep the same username, so I bet people will be able to recognize you

You are right, avatars do describe ourselves and our interests. I still feel good about using this one, I just think that it is time for a change. I am a little bored by it!

Of course you CAN change it if you want... That's mainly because I don't even know you, and I don't LOVE your avatar...
Remember, it's your choice whether to do it or not...
Happy myLotting everyone

I had better change it then if that is the case!
Thanks for your advice.

Its fine to be branded and all, but if that picture is 3 years old then it really isnt the current you. i mean if youre 53 instead of 50 that is one thing, but if youre in your twenties you change so much over 3 years that it would be smart to brand yourself again once a year or so. just think of guys like lebron james and kobe bryant in the nba...they changed their jersey numbers so that they could sell more jerseys. new is better from time to time

I do not know who lebron james and kobe bryant are, but I know what you are saying. Re-branding to keep up with the times is not a bad thing. We did this to our business logo and website last year. Some people did not like it as it was not familiar, but most thought it looked more modern and cleaner!

Will we still recognise you?
It's not the package but the contents that count
I chnaged mine last year when someone else decided to use the one that I was using at that time. This one is very similar to the one I had then. It is just a bit more active than before but i am still me

Hi Rawbill,
That's a good idea friend. maybe this time for your new avatar, you can already face the camera so we can see you! branding is fine but if you feel like changing your avatar it's your decision. now, i am excited to see your new avatar!

My new one will be facing the camera. I have often thought about this. The sideways photo was the only one that I had on my computer at the time when I first joined up with online communities, so I decided to use it for all of them. Most have been updated now though.

Hiya, well if it's any consolation my Avatar is nearly 2 years old (how time flies) but I can't change it because 1) there are no others on my computer and 2) I'm not very photogenic!

Yours is a great photo Jane as it shows great happiness. I like it.
You must have another one on your computer though as your profile photo at Stumbleupon is different to this one!
