Earthquake that thrills Manila....

I was in my Hospitality Training school. It is located along the United Nations Avenue, near the LRT station. Me and my co-trainees just had our lunch and ascended back into our room, which is located at the 3rd floor of the building. We were given a group activity, a role play, and we had our practice before the start of the session. Everyone were in their respective groups as our instructor gave a signal to the start our activity. The first group finished their presentation then we were the next. At around 2:00 pm, while we were in front of our co-trainees presenting, one of my co-trainees yelled "Lumilindol!!" We suddenly stopped our presentation. We took a feel if the ground is shaking. My instructor told us to stay calm. We felt another shake that lasted a couple of seconds. Everyone started to panic. One of my co-trainee saw that the water inside the bottle swirled by itself. Metals clanked underneath our tables. Window blinds swayed without anyone touching it. Even the picture frames inside the room gone out of its alignment, with the thought that it might fall. Our instructor immediately stepped out of the room to get some information on what to do. Some just stay calmed in our places and some were getting ready for anything that would happen next. Our instructor came back and gave instructions to fall in line and evacuate the room. We were in a single line. We walked as if we were running. Security officials took us to the nearest fire exit descending from the building. Everyone in the building were instructed to stay in the public park, which is a wide open area. Students from different courses were requested to stay in groups as my instructor also told us. There was silence in the building, but the tension outside rose. One of the head officers of the Security gave instructions to wait for further announcement on what to do next. We just found out that the earthquake was around in a magnitude of 6. It was the first time that ever happened in the building as what our instructor told us. Good thing everyone were safe. Some want to come back in the building to get their stuffs. Then, the Security officer gave a signal that we can go back to the building. We were not told to go back because our session had already ended due to time. We just jotted down our contact numbers to our instructor and she will give us a feedback regarding our classes for tomorrow. Thank God everyone were safe at that moment...

That was a nerve wracking experience although we have experience about intensity 5-6 here in Manila. I guess the thought that earthquake is occurring here and there with high intensities had made us aware about its consequences that I think also why we were able to stay calm about things because panicking would not help at all. I was impressed by the discipline you had made in your area.

thank you for the complement... if you're on the scene, you'd really forget everything. Your safety and of others is your main concern. I was just disappointed that not everyone followed the safe way in evacuating the building. I hope everyone should be aware on that.

That is expected when things like this happens. People will react differently out of their fears. There are those that would stay calm and there are those that would panic. But I hope majority did the right thing. It usually coming from those that panic are the ones that get more casualties.

...it is really important to stay calm and be alert whenever disaster arises... this would be a great lesson for us.

Actually we also felt the earthquake here in dinalupihan, bataan. It lasted a little longer than the usual earthquake I have felt before. I don't know maybe in manila the earthquake is stronger or maybe in here? But the good news is were safe and it's not like the earthquakes that destroy buildings. I hope that it will not happen and we must always pray.

According to the the news, along Manila had experienced the high magnitude... it is intensity 5... It is a wake up call for us that we must prepare ourselves for anything that might happen... and let us all pray on to that..

During that time, I was also at the office quietly waiting for my student to finish his work. Then suddenly, I did feel shaking. Since none of the people in my immediate area was reacting I actually thought I was the only one faking it. So for a few seconds, I was looking for a sign, like moving chairs or picture frames or swaying wall clocks. I couldn't see any. Finally, I blurted out, "Lumilindol ba, o ako lang?" That's when my student reacted and confirmed that an earthquake had occurred. Reviewing the experience right now, I find our reactions amusing. It's as if we really didn't think the earthquake would do us harm. But I was thinking the earthquake was probably strong, one because I felt it (i rarely feel earthquakes) and two, it lasted a bit longer than usual. Whew. This experience made me mildly think of the end of the world stories and the like. Hmmm.

I was lying on the couch trying to get some sleep during that time. I haven't really felt the ground shaking, nor my mom and my bro. We just knew that there was an earthquake because my bro's girlfriend texted him that they were having some sort of earthquake drill at school. Good thing nobody got hurt there!
