Moomin is heading for the V E T, how does your pet react when going to the VET?

March 25, 2010 9:15am CST
I have an appointment for later this afternoon, at 5pm. I have the cat carrier already out in the living room, with his sheepskin inside it and also one of his favourite cat toys. Moomin is currently curled up asleep on the sofa, although I know he knows the cat carrier is out and ready for a reason. The last time I took him to the V E T we had quite a struggle as he really didn't want to co-operate and it took ages to get him into his carrier and out to the car. I have already taken the precaution of shutting the doors so he can't *escape* and, so far, he hasn't really been too bothered about the carrier, but he has sniffed at it a few times and then wandered back to the sofa for another nap. I have found his old harness as well, so we can get him into that before we leave, at least he won't be able to make a run for it if he's on his harness and lead - lol Do you have to go through all this routine just to get your pet to the vet? What are your strategies for an easy *capture*?

Last week, i took our 10 week old Kitten to the Vet to have his wound on the neck checked. His name is Charlie. As my 6 yr old daughter placed the carrier bag on the floor, Charlie was immediately inside it. He loves to play in it while he was still smaller and he must have missed it, so - there he was no hassles, no fights. On our way to the Vet, just a walking distance away, he was crying & meowing like asking for pity. I think he was afraid to be outside or be taken somewhere alone. On our way back, he did not fuss even a little bit. He was quiet and busy looking around. I think he must have understood that it was all okay.

Aw it's often easier with kittens, they haven't learnt to resist LOL

Ya, that would be great! Have an appointment and he runs off. Whenever I or my family have taken cats or dogs to the vet we usually either had a box(no carriers back then) or just put them in the back of the truck. Animals have a mind of their own and are going do as they please most of the time regardless of what we would like to see happen.

LOL I was more than a little bothered that Moomin would decide to do a runner when the time came, thank goodness he was fairly co-operative this time.

Actually goth I have a dog, and she doesn't really mind going to the vet at all because she really likes the vet. The lady is really nice and I just have to bring her in on her leash. I don't have to put her in a carrier so as far as she knows we're just going for a car ride. I thought that once we would walk in maybe the "vet smell" would bother her but nope! Couldn't ask for a better dog to take to the vet.

Wow you're so lucky to have such a lovely hound hun. I msut admit I often dread taking Moomin to the vet as he can be such a little so-and-so sometimes.

it really depends on the cat.some of mine are easy about it,others the fight is on. my oldest black cat,all you have to do is set the cage on the floor and he goes right in. his cousin, the oldest cat requires 3 people.he knows what it is,and where it leads and is having no part of it.we often have to disassemble the cage, put him in,and rejoin the lid after he's in.and he cusses the entire way out and back LOL

Last time we took our cat,my husband had to hold the carrier on end and I had to dangle him into it first thing in the morning before hubby went off to work. At the vets I told them how tricky it was to get him in and he said always put him in backwards so he cant see what is coming. He picked him up after the session and just sort of fed him into it single handed so that's what I'm going to try the next time. He hasn't needed to go since.

Oh wow! Putting them in backwards does sound like an interesting approach! Will have to pass that info on to my friend, she has 2 cats that hate being put in their carrier!

I didn't realise...I've always put my pets in to their carrier backwards. The first time I ever tried I did it forward and the cat stuck its arms out. It worked like a charm going the other way. It's easier to lift them out head first too.

I never make a big to do about it. I just open the gates, get the cat carrier from the garage....it's already been cleaned and has a fresh towel inside, take it inside, put Banjo in it, back to the car, put another cover over the carrier so he can't see movement. I hop in the car, back it out and off we go. He usually makes worried sounds most of the way but he will also settle for a time. It's quite a long way to go. Once there, we wait our turn then Banjo is lifted to the examining table and I hold him where they tell me so he can be examined. This applies to any cat of course...Banjo has only been to the vet once to be spayed and I just handed the carrier over to the vet and the nurse...he was to be done later that afternoon.

I don't really have that much of a problem. I keep the carrier out 24/7 and they think its a special "cave". So When we have to put them in it for whatever reason, we just put them in front of it and in they go no problems. As for the trip up to international, that's not so bad eaither. They just sit on the seat or my or my partner's lap. (we let them ride without the carrier) and they love it. We keep their "cave" on stand-by, but with Precious we don't need it. George just gets out my wheelchair, and he gets on my lap while George pushes me in the wheelchair. Our "special friends" (aka the vet) are inside pet smart. And, Precious loves to go to pet smart. Of course he thinks its "His special wal-mart". And, he treats it like a second home. On a good day he'll even sit on the bench outside the in the waiting room by himself while I hold his leash. Me sitting in the wheelchair right beside the bench. I even had Precious purr one time when we were waiting, and when we went into the room He got on the table and let them do their business grolwing only once when his hind paw was disturbed. Our other cat Chinnia is real quiet. She doesn't do anything and we usually have to dump her out of the carrier. She doesn't like to leave our apartment. Where as precious will jump into the bed of the truck from my arms and let himself into the truck through the sliding back.

Your furry friends sound wonderful hun, I wish Moomin was that co-operative. Last time I took him to the vet it was a real battle to get him into the carrier and he was pretty mad by the time we got to the vet.
