freelance work

I am trying to get started with some freelance work, but don't really know where to start. I have signed up on a couple free websites so I get job postings. I have placed bids on a couple, but I haven't received a response. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get this to be a lucrative business?

There are few freelancing sites like getafreelancer.com which are genuine but needs bidding to win a job.
In case you are into freelancing writing, there are lots of websites that pays for writing like xomba etc
Other thing you can do is to promote yourself and your work. Once you get 1-2 assignments and you can do that successfully, work will flow in.
