18th birthday

In our country, one of the biggest occasions in a girl or woman's life is her 18th birthday. This is the time when a girl is officially introduced to society, meaning, she is now considered an adult or rather, a young adult. Some parents allow their daughters to have a boyfriend when they reach their 18th birthday. In our language we call the celebrator as "debutante". Others celebrate it in simple rights with eighteen candles, eighteen roses, eighteen treasures, etc. It's all about eighteen but for girl celebrants only. I believe other countries like the United States, celebrate 16th birthday more than the 18th birthday. What can you say about this? What is your custom in your country?

That is now creating big business in our country. The family of the debutante will have to spend hundreds of thousands of pesos if they have to follow they traditional way which involves all the rites. Years back, reaching 18 was only celebrated simply because of practical reasons. Today however, things have gone crazy. Event organizers are making this big business for themselves and their cohorts.
