I came up this question these days becoz of one thing, the distance between me and my current boss is widening. When I came here new, I was so not afraid of him, also he went easy on me. but as time goes by,he is getting more tough on me and thereof we are communicating much less, now he is a real boss to me standing high up there.Well I m not saying that's not good. sometimes I feel so right to be close to him coz you can easily play your ideas in front of him, you are visible enough to stand out. while sometimes it feels so bad to expose ur downsides and weekness to him, building up contrasts with the good image you presented to him before working for him. That's the risk!and now i find it especially inappropriate to get involved with each other's personal life like friends do, sounds like it's hard to adpat the roller-coaster distance with him, now he is like a friend, while one minute later he is 'playing down ' on you, maybe for your own good. I draw the exprience from my previous job when i get too much involved with my boss in non-business converstations. so involved that one day when he denied my proposal of 'stimulas package' straight, my trust for the work and company right away tumbled down to nothing. what do you think?

Hi, Bill!
A great deal of the time, the distance is a matter of how much direct contact there is. At other times, it's a matter of respect. I remain as distant as possible from my boss, because he's a rude, nasty person!

I do all I can to avoid the administrative staff. Generally, I close the classroom door, and my students are my only concern.
The job market is supposed to be picking up in the US. However, here in Florida, we have the highest rate of unemployment - 12.5%. Jobs are really hard to find. It's a shame. They're also cutting just about everyone's pay and benefits. There's a bill before the legislature to pay us teachers only 50% of our salary, then base the other 50% or less on how well our students do on tests. Since I teach high school seniors, I don't think it's right to base my pay on all that's happened with at least 11 teachers before me, as well as any number of other factors!

Hi, Joanna, for those people who lost jobs,do they get any insurance or premiums from the official? If city people dont have jobs, then i can't imagine how could they survive without subsidies from gov.

unless you are stepping up to his partner, or u just can't escape the occasions of embrassment or hard-to-propose-issue times. is it?

enough to draw a line between the follower and the leader would be enough..

I have the best of both worlds now, my boss is across the little pond from me. Im in Canada and the company I work for is in Europe. So I dont have to see any of them. Im not even sure what they look like lol. Makes for the perfect job!!

Seems that you prefer to lay low and underground,lol..
but if ur company is a large orgnazion, then the bureaucracy might present a wall between you two, but here the company is not that large and everyday i m working under his eyes.

I think that it's always better to keep a distance from our bosses, no matter how caring or understanding they may be. We should keep our relationship strictly work-related. Of course, I am not implying we should be cold towards our superiors or work. Unless you know what you are doing, and that you will be careful when socializing with your boss, it's best not to get too close to your boss, or let your boss know too much about you, because that almost always will put you in a disadvantage that you would never thought of.

I totally agree your point. and it has nothing to do with the company culture i guess, even if the culture is very relaxing, you can expect when will the fireball fall into you. it's reasonable to stay close in the work field with the boss, while personal life should be set apart from that.Friend is just not a word between us, at least true to me so far.Thx for the words.

in my opinion,if you get the abilities needed in your work and by your boss and you are loyal to your job and company,it's natural that your boss will trust you and try to be close to you becoz he and his company both need you .so,distance is not the substantial problem, you need to find out what you lack in your work and make up for it
