Yes, this is usually called "whitehat" and "blackhat." Black hat hackers are the bad guys who steal your credit cards, commit fraud, and create viruses. White hat hackers are often hired as computer security specialists and will do everything they can to expose the holes in your system so that they can teach you how to fix those holes.
