Can a soul leave its body?

I had a discussion with someone one of these days regarding the soul. We tried to find a definition of the soul and an explanation of it leaving the body... to heaven or to any other place. It was really hard to separate the notion of soul from the notion of body, and we didn't come to a conclusion on whether the soul is able to live without its "hardware". So we couldn't explain afterlife, haunting, spiritism and the like. Needless to say that the discussion was not at all religious, that made the subject very interesting. What is the soul and how can it live without a body, if it can? Isn't the soul generated by the body and thus strictly connected to it? What do you think?

Yes it's very possible that the soul can leave the body and every living being has the possibility or power to do it. It takes some practice but leaving the body or "Astral Projection" as I've heard it called is a highly acquired skill. I enjoy practicing and reading about the subject and find it very interesting. There is a religion called Eckancar which bases it's religion on disconnecting the soul from the body to realign with the divine or God.

Then in those moments I presume the body is left with no soul? If the bond is broken, then most probably the body does not live anymore... that is, while the soul is separated, as you said... do you suggest that it comes back to life when the soul "re-installs"?

You need to be more specific. I don't see your point. Thanks.

yes that is a matterof thought i think. but according to the epics if you go and if you just consider any living thing then it is mentioned there that soul is immortal and body is just like a cloth for a soul. and it just change this. i am not sure about how uch this is corrct but what ever it is. i have just share with you. and as you are talking about the country then it is a matter of patriotism i think more.

Well this is a interesting question. I never believe in soul and all those stuffs. I dont know if the soul in real exists. Am a biology student, so i know its just the functioning of body. When it stops, the body is useless. So i really dont believe all those sayings of soul, heaven , hell and spirits.

You're saying that everything a person is... is generated by the body...and if the body is no longer, then everything stops. The rest might be imagination, or hope.

YUP! Such incident happens so many times by so many different people anywhere around the world. It's also appeared from historical records that the physical division of the human person into body, mind, soul, spirit etc comes more from Greek philosophy than from Christianity. SOUL departing from the body reminds me of my favorite TV series show entitled CHARMED!

It's interesting how that happens... Thanks for the input.

ha! there are numerous events like this, in newspapers and in some psychic books or paranormal websites... :D i think people are alsway fascinated with stuffs like this. My brother once told me he has a friend who can "Astral Travel". I believed it was true and that it took him quite a while to be able to do this and he has travelled to a lot of places!

There is something that gives feelings to human beings. I mean a machine could have senses, even more than we have, but they can't feel mercy, happiness, courage ... There must be a soul, that at least we know. But does it separate? How?

Although late to this conversation, here are my two cents. Since there is still a lot to learn about our universe, I feel the best definition of soul is our essence. According to Einstein or some physicist, matter cannot be created or destroyed. I believe that matter cannot be destroyed. And speaking of our bodies, I've been working on a story after careful research. When you investigate the effects of space travel on animals and humans, you find that the use of the body, as we know it, is different in space than it is on earth. It seems that in space, any being that has been out there long enough will not have that much need for a body as we know it. So I'd say that our body is connected to the soul. I think this give "I think, therefore I am" and "In the Beginning was the Word" a different meaning from what we are used to. In other words, which came first, the mind or the body? Which came first, the body or the soul?

What I know is this: Man is a spirit (the Bible says that God created man in His likeness and His image. The image of God is how God is... a spirit. The likeness of God is His character, how He behaves, what He does). For the spirit that is man to interact with this world and the physical things, God created a body and put the spirit in it. Then, for this man-in-a-body to interact with other men-in-bodies on an intellectual and emotional level, God gave the man a soul. The soul is the repository for man's emotions, feelings, thoughts, etc. This completes the tripartite representation of man.

It is just like the question: What do you think existed before, the egg or a chicken? The way I would explain it is that there could possibly be no chicken if the egg didn't exist before. If to look at the way how things grow on earth, like grass, flowers or trees, they all grow from small to big. Just like human babies are not born at a size of a grownup and then start to shrink as they grow older. Of course there is a time when a human body rather shrinks a little than gets bigger, but that is at an old age. The physicians have said and proved to us that everything consists of energy and energy is in fact the smallest of all things we can ever imagine, then I believe that there must have been energy way before there could be any material things. Of course our bodies are the ones that give out the feelings and emotions to the world around us, that we can not see and they might as well be at a quite similar size to energy. But I just could not imagine of anything large existing before there could be something small. And of course, as the soul is the one we can not see with our eyes, but would not be able to live without, it must be something quite small as well, like in a size or level of energy. Then again it has been told that energy is something that has always been, will always be, can change from one form to another and can never be destroyed, I believe that the sole can definitely live without the body, in fact I believe that the sole is the one that starts forming the body. About the haunting, ghosts, etc. I have heard that all the objects, as they consist of energy as well, have the ability to record the emotions and the energy that is drawn towards them. That is why there are some objects, houses or places that make us feel good and maybe bring us back some good memories and then again there are places, objects or houses that make us feel bad or uncomfortable. So I believe that the ghosts or the haunting might just be the feelings or the energy vibes sent to these objects at some period of time and when the surrounding energy is somewhat similar to what it used to be at the time these energy vibes were sent to them, the memories might come back or be seen in one form or another. I have no idea whether these things make any sense at all, but that's what I read and heard from somewhere. I have no idea about the afterlife and whether it does exist or not, but I have made my own belief for it according to a dream or something that I seem to remember from somewhere. As it is way too long story I am not going to bother anyone with it, but I just believe that there is a place in the universe where the soles without bodies exist and sort of wait for their time to get a new body to live in. This is just a belief I have made myself according to my dreams etc. and understanding of the world. I have absolutely no idea what the reality of such things are and am definitely not going to ask for anyone to believe the things I have written, it is just my way of understanding them.

Soul is not something physical, and I agree it can't be easily proven or sensed. Psychologists, though, study the soul as a "product" of human's body. Thoughts are created only by neurons, which are something physical. Can thoughts be created in other ways? If I understand well what you say is that something can be created from nothing, and I'm pretty confident that even energy can not be created out of nothing. It looks like a circle, but it has to start with a brain activity, if you ask me. You're theory looks plausible, until this point...where does it all start? ~ thanks for showing interest in my topic and welcome to myLot ~

Anybody can claim that their soul leaves their body and they can see their mortal body. But the thing is up to a certain extent no one can really testify to its veracity.Until we die and find out for ourselves, we will never know the truth. Well unless you die for lets say a day and for some miracle you will be revived then maybe we will find answers but for now that question remains a mystery and i think we should let it be . ;)
