We went to town and on the way we watched a baby horse trying to be born. Don't know if it ever made it. We thought the mom was having problems so we told the owner and he said he would go down and check on it. But an hour or so later we were coming back by and it looked like the horse had given up and the owner was no where in site. Couldn't do anything for the poor horse. This really pissed us off cause if it was our horse we would at least try and help her get the baby our. We are going to town today and will see if she is still there or what. The picture I added shows the mother and baby coming out. I couldn't get any closer. So what could you do if this wasn't your horse or property?

Hi Hofferp if it was my horse I would have called the vet too and still tried to help the mother in any way I could. It wouldn't have bothered me to reach up into her and help pull the baby out. But it wasn't my horse and nothing I could do. The owner is simple and didn't think anything of it. Maybe there was nothing anyone could do. I still don't know if the baby made it or not. Will find out in a few days if we don't go to town today we will in a couple of days.

I hate seeing animals suffer (if that's what was happening in this instance), so I would have gone into the field to see if there was anything I could do; however, I do understand your concern in view of the nature of the owner.
Have you been back that way to see if the foal is running around - it could be you know. Please keep us updated when you next go into town. I would love to know that both horses made it.

Hi Abbey. No haven't been back that way guess it will be more like Monday or Tuesday before we get back to town. I will keep everyone up to date about the colt. I know these people he is the kind that might shoot you before asking what your doing or I would have jumped the fence.

I have horses and sheep, so I would have simply gone out and helped it being born. I know how to do it, have done it many times.
And, by the way, horses don't often have trouble and it does take awhile. So, the owner would have known his animal, and if they were actually in trouble or not. You may not have known the true situation since you are not familiar with it. But the owner may also have had to go back to the house to call a vet, as that is pretty much the only person you can call for help in these situtations. And it will cost hundreds of dollars.
So, have you gone back there since to see if there is now a baby colt running around? If you are truly concerned, you should go and see and you may be pleasantlly surprized.

Hi Annie. I haven't been back there just don't have the gas to go this far and see if the baby is okay or not. It worried me cause the mother was laying there and not moving when we came back through. Thanks for telling me what you know. I feel a little better. We may have to go into town today and will look and see if the baby is okay. I worried cause the owner is not all there.

Not all there? You mean mentally challenged?
And sometimes hard decisions just have to me made when you own livestock. If she couldn't have the baby for whatever reason, or got injured during labour, there is always the possibility of putting them down to end their suffering.
But horses, as a general rule, don't have much trouble. It is fairly rare that you have to help them.
Let me know what you find out when you make it out that way again.

Hi Annie. Yes really mentally challenged. Don't know what the extent is but have seen him do things that I wouldn't do in a million years. One day we were driving by there and seen him tearing dow a building from the inside out not the right way it could have fallen down on him. I will let you know when I find out. I don't know it just looked bad. When we went by on the way home she was laying there not moving at all and we sat there a few minutes to see if she was alright but she never moved. We went back by the owners home and he was no where to be found. Just didn't know what to do.
