My sons play Runescape, an online multiplayer game. One study showed Runescape as being good for kids because of the social aspect-the friendships are based on personality rather than looks. One parent blogs how it teaches teamwork during the quests, currency with the bartering and trading, economics, and there are over 100 quests that are logical and mathematical. Runescape also allows children to learn how to follow rules and consequences, learn time management, watch out for scammers, teaches advanced arithmetic, and map reading and navigation skills. Many researchers have noted how the Wii keeps children from being sedentary and many proponents have noted how video gaming increases hand-eye coordination. One research study says we need more video gaming! It prepares students for competitive global markets by improving thinking skills, higher order thinking skills, strategic thinking, critical thinking, interperative analysis and problem solving, and formulating plans allowing children to execute plans and adapt to rapid change. Techlearning.com found that elementary students that played video games had strong learning gains in language arts, science, and social studies and improved their meta-cognitive skills. Obviously kids can't be just sitting around playing video games all day, they need balance in their lives. But perhaps video games aren't the evil ogre we've all thought them to be.

Video games are a good way to relax but there is the competitive side of MMORPG games (games like Runescape) , which can make the game addictive. For example in WOW, you see children turned into brats because they're WOW privileges are revoked. I play runescape and I think it's great that ur son plays it. But remember to not let it suck him into the game too much..Moderation is the key.

oooh Yes I play runescape too, My buddy Kingrezz101 have been veterans since it first started, I don't mind what people think and I do think they are adding more educational items into the game itself such as the new quests, puzzles, etc.! Though as you have mentioned they really shouldn't be sitting around! More video games should be like this, fun and educational! - Fry

I also play RuneScape. I started when I was 16, and I'm 23 today. What I have gained most from RS is probably several good friends. Few of them I met back when I started and we were just youngsters who were killing time (and monsters ofcourse). Now we are all university students with plans to start an internet based company. I strongly doubt that I would have met these people without RuneScape. Other advantages with RS: When I started to play the game my grades in English improved. No matter what the tasks are I'm always good at multi-tasking. Because of the addition of the "Grand Exchange" I got interested in the stockmarket which has given me a (small) ammount of money that I wouldn't have had otherwise. As you said, playing video games all day isn't good hehe..

I enjoy playing RuneScape. I have even made some new friends from playing it. At times it might get boring but usually if I give it a break for a few days or maybe even weeks and I come back to it, it is not so boring anymore. I think that people always say video games are bad, but that is usually the parents complaining about their children. My question is, Have those parents that complain ever tried the games?

I learned a little about the stock market using the Grand Exchange it helped teach mesupply and demand a little. Also, since I have membership torwars runescape soem of my navigation skills improved thanks to the big virtual world. Also, ts good for socialing with others. -Rezz
