Why a wooden spoon?

Last weekend I was watching the Six Nations Rugby.
Scotland were playing Ireland and they were saying that they had to win to avoid being awarded the wooden spoon.
That got me thinking why do we call it the wooden spoon why not another type of cutlery?
Where did the idea of the wooden spoon come from?
Why do we award it to the team that loses?
What sort of prize would you award instead of the wooden spoon?

I can't enlighten you on that topic. I'll just share some of my thoughts. I think that the material, the wood is chosen because it's not expensive, it doesn't honor the team that receives award (unlike gold or silver or bronze). And why is it spoon? Perhaps because knife or fork would be too aggressive? Or perhaps because babies eat liquid food with spoon, they don't use any other cutlery. I think that spoon has been chosen to humiliate the team that is playing more worse than others. And I have no idea of what prize I would award instead. Perhaps it would be a big red plastic potty...

Some good ideas there maybe that is the case. I love the idea of awarding a potty.
