I have told earlier now i am in Hyderabad in south india with my son. Here language is really a problem for me. I am from south-easten part of india basically, so i can speak, read, write Oriya, Hindi, Bengali, i can understand Urdu, Assamese besides English.
But I am not acquinted with the languages Tamil, Telgu, Malayalam etc of south India. When ever i go out of the home language becomes a barrier, the watchman, the venders, the fruit seller, the flower seller do not understand English or Hindi. While making purchases i have to point at the things and use sign language, it helps. Fortunately we hired a maid servant who knows Hindi, my wife and me have learned many words in Telugu from her, my grand daughters are catching more and more.
How to learn the language easily, any suggestion?
How many languages you can speak read and write, do you use sign language if you feel helpless, does that help?
Happy posting.

It's hard to go to a place that does not speak your language. It restricts your communication and activities. I don't think I will ever enjoy a place that no one understands me and vice versa. Even sign language makes little help in that situation. I hope everyone knows the international language so that there would be no language barrier.

Hey Professor! Wow! That is alot of languages that you know
and yet you still have a problem making yourself understood
where you are living now! I only know English so if I go anywhere
I would be in big trouble! I know a tiny bit of Spanish, but
barely enough to get by! In the US Spanish is the second language
now! Everything here is English/Spanish! I think that is amazing
how many dialects that you have in India! I had some very lovely
neighbors from India and they used to tell me about all the
different languages there were! The moved away and I miss them
alot! They were wonderful people! The husband was a doctor and
got a better job so they moved and were having their first baby!
I never heard from them again!

Yeah its really a big problem to a country like india. Here in the Philippines we also have many dialects and its hard to communicate every time we go to other part of the Province. I guess its also fun sometimes to communicate to people who don't speak our native tongue. That how we can appreciate other animals. Because no matter where they are if you bring cat form Paris to London they can still communicate.
Because all animal speak same language unlike us humans who prefer to localize our own language.

It can be challenging to move and then have language problems. It sounds like you are doing all you can to learn the new languages in your present locality. It might be helpful if you choose to specialize in one of the languages. The one that is most common on Hyderabad.
I am very keen on traveling and sometimes I have come across language difficulties. Like in Bulgaria it was very challenging and I had some misunderstandings. I booked a train ticket eventually.
I know shopping and speaking in the language helps. You could try to make new friends that speak the language you are trying to master. Good luck and well done for being brave with learning new languages.
I learned French at school for five years. I have been to Spanish language classes. My native tongue is English.

Even I am facing same issue when I was in TamilNadu. But somehow was able to learn few words after too much efforts. But it was nice experience though. I have been to many states, I was able to manage with English, Hindi and sign language. Nowadays there are many books available in market which can help in learning basic things. I think best way of learning any language is to listen and try to speak. It will take time.

Here in the Philippines it is not a problem anymore whether you went in different parts of the Philippines we can understand each other. Tagalog dialect is widely use here and so wherever we will go here anyone can understand you even if we have many dialects here we can still understand each other because of Tagalog and English.

Any language after a while will grow on you but in the meantime sign language is the only recourse you have and it will surely work. I had gardener who was mute and we did splendidly well getting along by using sign language

In India, every state has its own language. Besides, there are so many dialects. It is not possible to know every language of different states. Only if we go from one state to another we find that we are unable to communicate. If you have stayed in a state for long, you are bound to pick up to some extent the local language. There is no short cut for learning any language. Only thing you can do to hear, read, write and speak at least for two hours daily. Try to communicate with them in their language. Initially it would invite few suppressed giggles, but they will willingly correct you. Finally, you will find yourself proficient in the lingo.
