Ricky Martin's announcement has only confirmed what many suspected. Do you think he only announced this because he is writing his memoirs, and will state the fact he is gay in his book, so he wanted to advise his fans first? Will this "best kept secret" affect his record sales? Why did he wait so long? Will you look at him differently now?

It's his talent that matter. His career would depend on how good his PR is. There are a lot of gay artists who up to this day are still famous, a classic example is Elton John. They're famous because of their talent and not of their sexuality. Ricky Martin's coming out of the open could just be a way for him to hit the head lines and give his career a boost. I think only the gay community and his screaming lady fans would make such a big deal out of it.

I don't think it will have any bearing on his career either. He will still have all his fans. I was just wondering if the thought was it will get more publicity for his soon to be released memois.

Yes definitely. His announcement already caused much stir worldwide. I bet that book of his is going to be a best seller. Nobody here seems to be much surprised with his announcement but it certainly awaken a lot curiosities on the books content. So i guess, this is just another publicity gimmick.

To be honest I already knew Ricky Martin is gay. I think I must have read it somewhere; it may have been a roomer at the time and it ended up being true. I doubt it will have an adverse effect on his career because most people I’ve spoken to don’t seem very surprised by the announcement. He has a book out apparently and that is bound to sell very well. His career seemed to have gone downhill a bit of late and maybe this news may be the boost it needs!

Actually, paula, I'm surprised at the number of fans who didn't know, ar at least suspect he was gay. I don't think it will hurt his csreer, but do think he wanted it out there to help his book sales.

I learned this news today. I was in shock to hear that. But anyway, this is Ricky Martin's personal issues. It has nothing to do with me. So it's alright that he is gay. It is not easy to announce it in public and it does need the courage. So I think his fans shall support him.
I love China

I am surprised the news 'surprised' you. I thought everybody suspected that he was gay. I'm with you, though, and don't think it will affect his career, and neither it should. I believe it is directed more to create interest in his new book. Thanks youless, I would love to visit China one day.

dear mike,
i guess he was prevented before because the people around him (manager, sponsors, etc) were very concerned of his career that i why it took him long to reveal himself. whether his fans will look at him differently now, i am hoping not. because he is a very talented person, it is what the people should focus on.
have a nice day.

Hi ann, I agree with you, but nowadays people seem not to care about ones sexuality as much as they did in the past. I believe his publishers may have seen it an opportunity to direct some free publicity to his book. Thanks for your input, ann. Best wishes, Mike.

ricky martin is a big big celebrity and i think it is really not going to affect his career. yes i agree that many people over there will have a different kind of feeling for him. but this is natural.
i think that can be also a publicity stunt to get more sales.but there is a suspicion

I really don't know if it will effect his career. I suppose it will depend on how individuals take the news. For me personally, it doesn't bother me what his preference is, he is still the same person as he was before and I still enjoy listening to his songs.

Hi chookie, you and I share similar views. It doesn't really bother me either. I was more interested if people thought the announcement would assist book sales, when it comes out.

Honestly I'm not surprised by his announcement. I saw it yesterday on Yahoo News and really it didn't surprise me. I always kinda thought he might be gay, which is unfortunate because he's so good looking! lol I don't think it's going to affect his career, no. He isn't as popular in his music as he once was, at least not in my opinion. Maybe he did announce it because it's in his book, I don't know. I think it was a good idea though, before selling his book!

I guess he decided to come out if he's writing a book. It doesn't change how I feel about him. I always believed he was. What a waste though of a good looking man. I really don't think it was a best kept secret. I believe his inner circle knew plus there were alot of stories in the past relating to his sexuality. I think we all knew but he just never fessed up to it till now. Not a big deal to me though. Now if it was Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks or Johnny Depp coming out and saying they were gay, people would be in shock and it would be a big deal. Not Ricky Martin though.

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from. Not many would be surprised, however they have been some surprises in the past, Rock Hudson comes to mind.

Interesting . . . I had to look this up because I didn't know Ricky Martin even made an announcement. I say so what . . . I've always liked his music and he seems to be a good father to his twins . . . I'd still be a fan no matter what. Even if he "came out", yes, a lot of people have suspected it . . . it's not a gasping secret, I guess. Me, personally, I don't think I'd look at him differently . . . I applaud him for being truthful to himself and his fans!

I have never been a real fan of his, but I do like some of his music. I do think though the timming of the announcement was aimed at building interest in his memories. Thanks for joining the discussion.

He is only doing it now to sell his book. What exactly has he done since being on GH and having a one hit wonder song. I don't think there has ever been a big Ricky Martin demand nor will there be one now. It is all PR and by next week no one will remember or care about Ricky Martin.

I believe to some extent it does, most people tend t judge so fast. Like in his case maybe some are glad that he came out, but at the same time so many are disappointed too, well cant blame everybody. But heres the deal i believe no matter what will be the impact that it will have on you, for as long as your true to yourself thats what matters the most. And for as long as your happy with whatever it is that you did then go on and be free from other people judgemental eyes ;)

Well, he didn't have much of a career in the US to begin with. He may still be popular in Latin America, and I don't know how this announcement will affect him there. Here in America it's pretty safe to say that no one would care if he could magically pull diamonds out of his butt.

Ha, ha. I bet if he could pull those diamonds, his concerts would sell out quickly!
