Hair Washing Schedule

Each time I go to the salon, I always learn more and more about how to take care of my hair. Mine is probably down to the middle of my back now. I like it long, but I'm not sure that I like it that long. I'm debating what kind of cut and style to get next now that spring is almost here. I'll probably go a little shorter on the cut this time. I have to have a schedule to when I wash my hair because I'm always told by my hairdresser that it's not good to wash hair every day. She tells me that it's better to wash it every other day or even less frequent, if possible. I used to wash my hair each day because I'm paranoid about it becoming greasy, but now I don't know how I'd have time to wash and dry my hair each day, especially with how long it is and the time it takes to blow dry it. It still sounds weird to me not to wash it each day because I feel like it's not clean, but sometimes I can go two days without washing it. Of course, I have to wear it in a certain style by the last day because I'm paranoid that it will be greasy! I've found things that help with that, though. If I use a good shampoo and conditioner, it doesn't get greasy as fast. I also only apply conditioner to the ends, not the roots. I use hairspray or mousse to style it sometimes, which keeps it from getting greasy as fast. I know it sounds odd, but I would like to know how often you wash your hair. Do you have anything special you do to keep it from getting greasy if you wait a couple days before washing it again? I know for me, I love days when I don't have to wash it because it takes a lot less time for me to get my shower. However, when it comes time to wash it again, it feels so soft and clean after it's dry. Please share your hair washing schedule. I'm interested to know how you treat your hair and keep it healthy. Thanks in advance!

As I have gotten older my hair has not needed to be washed as often. But my scalp still bothers me if I do not wash it every other day. I use a mild, clear detergent, and usually no conditioner. I rinse with apple cider vinegar diluted in water. If I need to wash my hair and do not have time, I will spray it with apple cider vinegar in water. My hair is on the short side, and I hope it starts growing fast again, as I would like to be able to put it in a ponytail by the time the weather is hot. It is mostly gray, and I am leaving it that way. I do not blow dry. I wash my hair at night and let it air dry. It is naturally wavy. If it gets frizzy I use a little gel to style it.

I've heard that it's better to let you hair air dry. That's got to be much better for it than to subject it to the heat of a blow dryer. I try to air dry my hair whenever I can too. In the winter, I look forward to blow drying my hair to stay warm, but in the summer it's nice because air drying it feels so nice and helps cool me down. I don't use anything fancy right now, other than what my hair stylist tells me is the best for me hair. I also won't spend an arm and a leg on things for my hair that I can find other places for much cheaper (or find other products that are just as good as the expensive ones). Has your hair grown out enough yet so that you can put it in a ponytail?

Well, it has been a year. My hair is quite long. My hubby likes it when I color my hair, and I have found what I am going to do about that. I ordered Henna online. Now all the gray hair is red. Henna coats the hair and strengthens it, and as I use it more and more the gray hair will not be so bright a red, but more of an auburn. I need to trim my hair right now as I had put some dye on it earlier this year, but then started swimming and it really was hard on it. That is the nice thing about Henna, it goes on the outside of the hair like a coating and helps strengthen it.

What a great kind of hair dye! When my hair starts to go gray and becomes and undesirable texture, that's most definitely the stuff I'm going to use! I've never heard of anything like that before, where it actually strengthens the hair too. When the hair goes gray and ages, usually it thins out due to a lack of some kind of chemical that I can't recall the name of right off the top of my head right now. Either way, I'm so glad you found something that works well for you! Auburn hair is beautiful, and I'm sure it looks fabulous on you!

I have really looong hair all the way down my back to the middle of my butt, about 35 inches long. I don't wash my hair everyday neither, I usually wash it every other day but sometimes will wait till the third day. My hair is healthy and isn't scarggly, it looks nice. I even use the less expensive shampoo and conditioner, VO5 and Suave, both work fine with my hair. Although I do have to say when I have used some of the expensive stuff my hair does feel even nicer. I mostly wear it pulled back in a pony tail, its easy to take care of. I do my own trimming every couple of months. I am not comfortable with others cutting my hair, but there are times I would like to have it cut and styled. But then my hair is so easy to take care of, I don't like to do alot of fussing wih it.

Polly, I think your hair is probably as healthy as it is because you are consistent. While you don't wash it every day, you certainly keep up with it and trim it yourself as soon as you know it needs it (rather than waiting until you have time and an appointment to get in at the salon to have someone do it for you). By then, you've spent an arm and a leg just for a trim because the price is ridiculous, and of course, you have to tip on top of that. Plus you spend the time and gas to get there. If I could do my hair myself, I'd have it made! However, one of my younger sister's just started beauty school today, so I'm very excited for her to graduate and do my hair for free forever! I'm looking forward to that!!
