I have been for many years doing researches about the good and the bad things that religions have brought over mankind.
What I found out is scary, as the balance is mostly towards the bad.
I believe in the good faith of people who think they are doing good, and most of them do.
But I am really mad at those who use religion for power, for war, and for all those very bad things religions do.
I am not talking about God, that's irrelevant and has changed too many times in history to even deserve to be mentionned in this discussion.
Try to make your own list of good and bad things in religions and you will be surprised.
Don't you think?

In the early 20th century Wales experienced a revival so strong that public houses were almost empty. Men and women who used to waste their money getting drunk were saving it, giving it to help their churches, buying clothes and food for their families. And not only drunkenness, but stealing and other offences grew less and less, so that often a magistrate came to court, and found there were no cases for him.
Church services were held in packed churches lasting well into the night.
Men whose language had been filthy before, learnt to talk purely. It is related that not only did the colliers put in a better day's work, but also that the pit ponies were so used to being cursed and sworn at, that they just couldn't understand orders being given in kind, clean words, so that the pit owners were forced to buy new ponies! Yet, still the work output increased. The dark tunnels underground in the mines echoed with the sounds of prayer and hymns, instead of oaths and nasty jokes and gossip.
People who had been careless about paying their bills, or paying back money they had borrowed, paid up all they owed. People who had fallen out became friends again.
It started when on February 14th, in New Quay, Cardiganshire, young Florrie Evans stood to her feet and publicly confessed "I love the Lord Jesus with all my heart" a mighty move of the Spirit of God broke out in that Church. Hungry for the Spirit, many young people gathered in after-church meetings, and God began baptising initially, mainly young girls and women in their teens and early twenties, with the Holy Spirit. They began singing and praying spontaneously, there was shouting and rejoicing, even dancing in the meetings, and many of the girls were prophesying.
By the end of the first week over 60 responded. By the end of the second week Evan had already started on a whirl-wind tour of the South Wales valleys with his team of 5 girl singers and within a year or so 100,000 converts were said to be added to the Welsh Church.
This was unquestionably a Pentecostal visitation. Evan Roberts exercised spiritual gifts, including the word of knowledge, when things about someone in the congregation would be revealed, often leading to conversion.
When the spirit moves a religious revival like this one has great beneficial effects, ignore those here that proffer theoretical objections believe this clear empirical evidence.

Hi urbandekay,
The revival you talked about is one of the greatest revival i have ever heard. It has changed so many people around the world the world. My great grandfather was a convert by one of the missionaries that was produced by the revival tou mentioned above. Till now, the Lord speaks to us, He did not forsake us, we have are peace and happiness. But the sad part is no one can be a true Christian just by blood relations, being called a christian and being a christian has a great difference. Thanks for your sharing.

hey dude i may be offensive , i wished i was an atheist.as i am not interested in religion . but that does not mean that iam a bad guy .i too love people , understand their feeling , i know what hurts people emotion .
when you come to religion follower , every one commits sins each day . they abuse their wife, children , kill animals ,have hatred in their in heart , jealous feeling . atlast they go to temples , church , or mosque for cofessions. they pray to god , that he will forgive their sins , now tell me wats the thing here . commit sins , kill people , then ask forgiveness . ( if you are an indian you would know these )people dip themselves in river ganga etc to clean their sins . isnt that awkward . then they go in the open and commit sins . whats the point then yaar ..............

That is exactly my point, being follower of a religion does not make someone a good or a bad person by itself. But the belief that a god or gods have spoken to some selected individuals to tell them how to behave does not make any sense. Unfortunately, the wide majority of mankind thinks it has happened and they are able to perpetrate the worst actions when they are told by criminals who say they speak in the name of their gods.
In your point of view Religions are usefull to avoid responsability, because sins can be washed or forgiven. I think that is the first reason why people get a religion.

hey there I wouldn't say that religions are all bad,
but I do think religion is about power to a certain extent, I know some people who just cannot function day to day without religion to me that is extremely dangerous I won't go so far as brain washing but you understand my point.
I think the majority of religious people are good people and really believe they are trying to help, but there are also numerous wars started in the name of religion even us christian's have been guilty of this in the past (I was brought up in a christian family).
I also think that many people use bits of religion that suits them and dis-regard the rest. Including the church them selves where they have huge churches worth millions where as the bible says that we must live a modest life.
Or priest's who commit horrific acts with children and the church seems to cover up.
I think there are good and bad points about religion as a church to me is no different to say a cult or any other organisation that demands loyalty.
Hope you get what I mean I ain't being offensive just trying to put my point across in a way that doesn't hide but also doesn't offend I hope I have succeeded.

religions may serve as a guide for us, but its still our belief or faith that makes us good or bad.

I would limit my discussion on this topic to my own religion. To me all religions are good. As for my own religion I do not find any fault in it. It is perfect. It can take care of my morals and it is able to help me live according to my given nature. What more someone would want from the religion one is adhering to.
