i dont understand why some people dont want to go or attend college education, some are already satisfied with finishing high school. How come some chooses to work right away instead of taking the time to check what's in store if one had a college degree. Well, i know it requires a lot of compensation to get in to college, and that maybe one of the reasons. But for others who can, how come? Please share your stories. Thanks.

Well thats true. Without education, human is still an animal. With education, he learns the discipline and character of being a human being. Education shapes a man. So i strongly recommend stop child labour and impart education to ALL equally!

Dear friend, when i meant as animal i try to say, his sixth sense of differenciating unlike animals. I feel education is not bad at all. Its sad part and accept, that educated people misuses their knowledge and brains in wrong way! There is nothing wrong with the education as such! Equal when we believe we can change it, matter is no one considers the poor!

Equality can be attained only in our dreams. There will always be poor and the gap between the rich are getting far. And I totally dis-agree with you that a uneducated person is still an animal. You recommend to stop child labour, don't you know that most of the people that abused or take advantage of the child labour are educated persons, who do you think is the animal there? Maybe the uneducated because they are treated as animals . . . . He he he

good discussion here. I think when you say that without education a man is an animal probably in the sense that man would be illiterate and will not learn the basics of life. Morality is another lesson which is learned from the environment and the people that surrounds us. I also agree that with knowledge comes with responsibility that it should be put to good use and make wiser decisions.

As far as I am concerned, I think I can not agree with you more. It is the education that let many many people have a so successful life. I admire them so much. Now, I am still trying my best to learn as I can, I think the knowledge is power ,which will help me to have a successful life ,too.

I feel that you learn how to think in college. I've seen people who go to college because they think it will help them get a better job. But I've seen that college is not for everyone. I've seen athletes who could have gone to college and possibly better things but who stayed home with their girlfriends and got a job instead. And they seemed to be happy with their choice. I've seen very smart people who did not go to college and have been successful. I've also seen high school dropouts do it (Dave Thomas, the Wendys founder, for example.) I feel that although I am not successful yet, my education has helped me to learn how to think and use what resources I have to survive. I live in an area where they judge outside appearances and I have not fared too well with getting a good paying, highly respectful job. Yet, my math education has been the reason I can charge a pretty high amount to help people with statistics. Being a jack of all trades, master of none also allows me to use my college education when I write articles, blogs, poems, and stories. And don't forget, you said "education." Education is not just about college. Some people have a lifetime education of life. Some people work with their hobbies and later use that knowledge to become successful. There are many ways to be successful and sometimes, like in my case, it takes some people longer to achieve it. And lastly, some people don't become successful to some degree, because they give up. Yet, I feel everyone can be successful on reaching a goal "they" have set and not what society tells you that your success should be. For example, I know a girl who used to be a high school cheerleader. Awesomely beautiful, she married the high school quarterback and has had three beautiful children and she is proud of her accomplishments -- and so am I.

THats good that we are proud of our accomplishments and with or without education, I believe that a person can still achieve something! Maybe it depends on the education a person has and how he or she will put it in use. Maybe its not for everybody but those people who became successful even if they are highschool dropouts, they are just lucky that opportunity was given to them to be successful. THey have to strive harder because they didnt have enough education. But I believe that if a person has a good and quality education, anything is possible.

I agree Redphile. I believe it's a blessing (luck) that a person is in the right place at the right time when they are successful. And some people just keep trying and trying and trying until they succeed (or as you say, "they strive harder".) They are prolific and persistent. And I agree with you: you do not need a degree to be successful.

Hello redphile, you're right; although I'm not a college graduate due to financial reason, at the age of 54 I still want to get a degree in college. I am only in my three years in college when my father resigned from his job. I had to stop and work. Well it's really different when you have a degree. To compensate I read anything especially topics about accounting. I believe that people with no ambition and goal in life are the lazy ones who think that education is not important.

I believe many people really want to pursue college education to better equipped them for their future but the problem is if they have the financial capability. Maybe, they can attend the first year up to 2nd year but with the prevailing situation in our country wherein the higher the level in college means higher tuition fees, plus the expenses during field trips, ojt's and other related activities that are pre-requisites for graduation. Do you know how much you will spend if you want your child to be a Nurse? And after graduation how much is the review center and fees for board exams? Then look at your monthly pay slip. Being able to send your child to college is a fortune already.
My 2nd son is graduating from college this coming April 12, 2010, 7 years after graduating from High School. My eldest son also graduated after seven or eight years in college, why? Because of our financial status. But we are very thankful to God. My eldest son is now working already and helps a lot for the studies of my two other children.
However, we feel very sad at present for my graduating son because the school unfortunately will not allow him to walk in the stage because he is late in paying the graduation fee, the registrar and the school office personnel don't know the address or contact number of the person where he can get the toga, and when he ask if they will allow to rent to other source, the response is a very foolish "NO".

that is so unfair! Can you not file a complaint in the education department about that? Your son is graduating because he has earned it and no one should hinder him to do that. Its sad to hear that and i hope things work out. I know that if a person has a goal, no matter what he can achieve it. Life rewards those who struggles and dedicates their hardwork in going towards the goal.

My son is still graduating, the bad thing is they told him he can still attend and walk the stage this coming October 2010, another very very FOOLISH answer. I working on it now to file some kind of a complain to CHED. I'm still looking for the right person for an assistance , THAT'S HOW BAD THE SITUATION PREVAILING IN OUR COUNTRY IS.

I went straight into work as I thought I would make the most of my life this way and within my first work place I managed to become an under manager. It didn't last long and I've been doing various jobs since. I never really liked exams and things like that, I consider myself to be very smart and I thought that my path and career choice was a good decision at the time. I still do, although I find it very hard to get ahead despite being a very hard worker. I do wish I took the chance to study, so I will be making sure my sure as 110% faith in whatever he does and the same can be said for my daughter.

Well it takes a lot of hard work to get ahead and I'm sure you will get there. We will all have our chance to be on top with or without education. But it is still better that we have a good and quality education, until college, before we go out into the real world. Because we will learn a lot in school, although most of in life we will learn outside but the things that we need at work is taught mostly in school so for me it is really important. Its good that you will be doing it for your daughter and I think that is the best gift that we can give our children. Education.

I love to learn these days and am currently learning permaculture as I would like to be able to earn an income from this fantastic area as well as to be able to show people how to live more sustainable lives.
I did not go to college, or even finish high school. I left school when I was legally able to at the age of 15. I then went to work as I wanted to be more independent and not have to rely on my parents for anything.
At times in my life, I have wished that I had more of a desire at the time to continue with my schooling. I did not know what I wanted to do with my life, so I just left and got a job. If I had some more clear direction, I may have been focused more in my studies and then gone on to a higher paying line of work.
Instead I have struggled for many years, working long hours for bosses until recently. I now have my own successful business and have the life skills to know how to earn good money, but it took me over 20 years to get here!

I knew from the time that I was a very young girl that I wanted to go to college. The reason that I wanted to go to college was because of the fact that there was more opportunity that would have in life if I was to go to college. I loved college and I would do it all over again if I had the opportunity to even though it was expensive and I might never make up the money that I spent on college. I think that the cost is honestly one of the things that holds people back from going on in school.

The cost of quality education? That's nothing. You're not putting money to waste as long as we are studying our damn best, it maybe expensive but it will definitely help us out in building our future. It is sad that people dont have the money to get that good and quality education. I hope the government, in whatever country we may be in, that they focus on giving quality education at a low cost or affordable cost. That even public colleges or schools can be considered as giving quality education and produces excellent students.

well, getting an education, particularly college education, is more of a choice borne out of values we learn at home and from our friends. children of college educated parents normally want to finish their college education, even aspire to go to graduate school. parents with lesser education usually have children who hardly aspire to get the better. well, the cycle, the vicious cycle in human development may explain this scenario.

i agree that we learned the value of education from parents and the family that we have come to live with. i just hope that for those who werent able to finish a college education that if ever they have kids of their own that they would want to aim for a good education for their own kids as well. something that they did not achieve.

i am of the view that good education is key to the success in life.
nothing can beat a good education degree in life.
i can tell you my example.
i am a textile degree holder.
after serving in textile industry for about 16 yrs. , i left the services to start my own business.
i had no experience of business.
i struggled a lot in establishing a business, but could not succeed.
so finally i tried my luck again in industry with the help of my old colleague.
i was interviewed on the basis of my engineering degree and past experience & i got a respectable job.
so, this is what the good educational degree can help revive.
thanks to my good educational qualification

I am all for education and I enjoy constantly learning myself. I feel I have learned far more since I left college about life.
I recognize that there are some people who just want to get out of the education system quickly and just get a job - in fact any job. I see nothing wrong with this because if everybody kept seeking more and more intellecual knowledge, the world would be a pretty difficult place to manage because all the jobs like cleaning the trash and working in the fields would not appear desirable. To work in manual jobs in this way is very important and contributes to the world, adds value to the lives of everyone.
I am a Zen practitioner, and in Zen there is no judgement. Every job, every task is consider important and every worker is equal to every boss - as there is no judgement, there is no difference.
A Zen master once said to a farm worker who was seeking enlightenment.. "[to get enlightlened] chop sticks, carry water... enlightenment" _Derek

I beleive that education is the key to success in many ways but having education as of now is too really high and expensive. And many are cannot afford. But there are many ways of being educated like taking an exam for scholarship in government and some are priovate sectors. Others are being self supporting students they work and study at night. All of this are depend upon the individual that would like to finish their studies and being educated as well. Thanks and have a nice day!

hi redphile,
I don't think so that education is the key to one's success in life. I think it contributes something for a person to be successful but is not the real thing needed for a person to be successful. Success depends on the person itself. And the environment just contributes on it.

There are several reasons why one not attend university. the obvious one is how expensive it is, despite the loans and scholarships that are on offer.
also it is not always necessary to have a college/university degree. both my parents have managerial positions and neither went to college/uni.
some people have particular career goals that require other options than college such as apprenticeships or specialised schools.
finally if someone ahs the opportunity to go straight from highschool into their dream job or comfortable position they may not want to give that up and gamble on university, which they may fail out of, or which may simply not help them to succeed.
everyone's needs are different and college/university simply isn't right for all of us.

some are really lucky enough to get their dream job or earn money quickly even though they havent finished college. But not everyone gets that luck so instead of taking a chance why not be ready and be equipped with necessary skills not just the job that you want but any other job that you can.

You know what, redphile, I wouldn't categorically say that education is s key to success but it gives you the edge to succeed. Consider this: two people applying for a job; after evaluating other aspects of their qualifications and finding them equal one was a high school grad while the other was college educated. Well, the latter most often gets the job. I've known of people who dropped out of high school or never finished college but are now successful in business or in whatever endeavors they are in. On the other hand, there are a lot of college graduates who are jobless, underpaid, overqualified, misplaced or simply, for one reason or another, not successful. The bottom line is, it is one's determination, initiative, his fighting spirit to achieve one's goal in life that is really the key to success.
