"you don't write well"

Okay, that was what my thesis adviser had told me and I'm so struck by that. I know I'm really bad in technical writing but he didn't have to say it so bluntly. I'm a sensitive person and I can easily absorb everything that you say to me that's why I feel bad right now. Some people say my writing is good and other professors have even commented that I can write well and have to keep it up. But that was only if I'm writing informal or creative writing. Why can't I be good in technical writing too?! Urrggh, I can't even think straight right now because I'm so into his comments. I just don't want to find myself losing the ability to write because of that stupid comment; I love writing a lot. But right now, I am like afraid to write again because of that and I'm so sad about that thought. Could anyone encourage me or give me an advice? I really do need a good word or better yet positive thinking right now, thanks :(

silver lining. instead of getting upset over these words (although you have every right to be upset) you should use them as motivation to improve. perhaps you could ask him why he doesn't liek your writing technique and how he thinks you could improve. then you can think "ok, i'm going to prove to him that i CAN write well, and i will succeed"

At times I find myself confusing about the past and present tense in my stories and I go out of line a lot. What books should I buy, to get to sharpen my writing skills.

Don't give up and keep on writing. Yes, you need positive thinking and I'll be willing to give you some. Anyway, to write a thesis is not easy, and an effort shown is good enough already. Just take what your adviser has said and put away the emotions..just concentrate on improving and you'll see yourself to a better momentum. Good luck with more awesome writings..

Writing a thesis requires preparation. Your data must be complete and you must know clearly what you are trying to find out in your study. Remember that your thesis will be a basis of some future work. Ergo, everything that is written in your thesis must be true and correct. Now, when it comes to the comment of your teacher, you must not be so touchy at all. He is already giving you the advise that something must be overhauled in your writing style. If the thesis requires technical writing, by all means do so. It might be too late if you are required to rewrite the whole draft after the revalida. Now, go get Turabian and study it. That is usually the format they follow. Know the terms and obey according to instruction. This is the only way you can achieve excellence. The creative writing can come after the thesis.

You have company in me shy smile. :) Come on sweetheart, we are there for you, arent we, forget that adviser, redo because you cant really escape that work, but who says you cant vent it out. :) My English teacher used to be so exasperated at me, she used to beat me on my knucles. She often told me, if you put your heart into it, you can do it, I know you have that caliber, but the problem is you are just not trying hard enough. :) At that time, I hated her. Now, whenever I think of her, I think my god, she did a lot for me. :) She even told everybody that I was the best artist that they had in the class. :) he he. So - she was indeed interested to make me something. It is just that I took my time to understand her. :)

Thanks! I guess it went well for you. In the end, he approved of my writing too, well, with a little help from my friend. Actually, he thought my friend revised the parts he corrected but I did it, I just didn't tell him, haha :)

I think you write quite well. I wouldn't let one comment bring you down. Sometimes, I think thesis advisors think their goal is to tear you down to build you back up in their image. I'd listen to all the other people and professors and keep on writing...

Thank you! yeah, professors are some kind of... quite unfriendly at times to make you better. Just get the hang of it.

Just by merely reading your discussion, I'd say you are a good writer. You feel bad because you do not want to accept what your thesis adviser told you and it's good that you have the courage to open it up. A lot of people here in MyLot are always ready to cheer you up and encourage you to stand up and show him you can do better. You don't have to hate him though, he was just doing his job (although it may sound harsh to you). Why don't you ask him in detail, if possible, what you are doing wrong so you can come up with a work he can never criticize. I'm sure with your good command of the English language (as obviously as it is), you'll even pass with flying colors! :)

I would not get disheartened at all. It would be a challenge for me to prove my professor that I can make it as well. Just ask him where are you failing. What does he pretend of you. Ask him how you can improve your writing skills. Share your problem with fellow students and ask them for hints. Don't get disheartened keep trying.

Well. well do you want to write or do you want people to stroke you? People are sometimes jerks and sometimes don't know how to get a point across. If people are going to be evaluating you, get out of it what is valuable for you. You can not please everybody. It goes something like this: Mr. or Ms. Thesis Advisor, I have been told by many people that I write well. What exactly do you see and can you suggest any ways and means that I should consider to improve ?... in your opinion?" Work on developing a thicker skin. If you don't, you can miss out on a lot of avenues that may be benifical to you. The advisor will probably remain a jerk, if that be the case, but you will not be robbed of something you may need to further you progress. I realize that you submitted this a while ago. I do hope that you get a chance to read this. Do not let others steal your joy. Head up! Foward! March!

Different people have different ideas about what is and what isn't great writing, don't be discouraged by one person telling you it isn't good. You're not a bad writer if you struggle with a certain type of writing. Technical writing may be your weak point, but remember you can always improve and you're not always stuck being the student who "doens't write well". Personally I think that your thesis adviser was out of line telling you that. Teachers and mentors are supposed to encourage and build their pupils up, even if they struggle with some things. Don't be afraid to write again. There's always going to be someone who think it's bad, just don't let it keep you from trying again.

Being a writer myself, I have had my fair share of positive and negative comments. The most I can say is don't let the negative comments get under your skin so quickly because that comment was one amongst many. The positive overpowers and outnumbers the negative and from what I've read, you have more of the positive and just one criticism. Though we all have to accept that we can't be good at everything we do. Sure, we're good at a certain field of writing, but it doesn't mean that we're good at the other fields. The most you can do now is to keep doing what you're good at. In your case, keep doing your creative writing because that seems to be your strong point. And one more thing, don't mind the negative comments, or at least don't let it get to you so quickly. The only time you're supposed to let it affect you is if it's already way to many and it overpowers the positive feedback you obtain from others. Hope I helped you. ~luvs2write

Hi Aauecon, It's a positive comment friend. Take it as a challenge. Your teacher want some more in you. She can see that you have the potential and she wants to squeezed it some more. Yoou can definitely write.
