So, I never thought it would happen, but I spilt coffee on my laptop keyboard yesterday
Amazingly, the computer works I turned it off and wiped it down Obviously, there are certain keys that aren't working
For example, the period or dot key, the directions arrows and the backslash key, as well as a key i am not sure what it is
any suggestions Opps, no question mark either To make matters worse, I don't have the heart to tell my mom who gave me the laptop It is five years old and an iBookG4 she treated it like a baby and here I spill cold coffee on it
I am planning on having her show me a few things about the computer in the next few days, and this happens
She is bound to find out some of the keys don't work
Any Help!

I listen sometimes to Kim Komando, a computer guru with her own radio show. She says that even spilling Coke on a keyboard isn't a disaster. Just hose it off and let completely it dry in the sun. Of course, she's in Arizona where an hour in the sun will dry out anything! Here, it would take a couple of days. Anyway, you have a laptop so that's not really relevant but keyboards recover better than you would think.

yeah, my bf bought me a replacement logitech keyboard that you can plug into the laptop via usb portal. Now I don't have to worry about not being able to use periods or question marks. For only $15 I can get a replacement keyboard for the mac on ebay. The pop right out from the videos I see on youtube. But I have to share this one video which is just bizarre on how to "clean a laptop"http://www.youtube.com/watch#!v=Q5had1RBK70

You better take it to a technician the sooner time. If you won't get that cleaned up from the inside, other serious problems might occur. Liquid into electronic devices will damage it further if not cleaned up early. There is electricity inside and liquids are conductors. I know about it because I'm a technician too. Or better tell your mom to be the one to get it to a service center.

Tell your mom right away about what happened. She could bring the laptop to the technician and have it fixed. The sooner the better. And next time, be careful. Don't mix food with computer work.

Accidents happen so fess up and tell her the truth before she finds out on her own!
She will surely understand won't she?
It is a five years old and things are bound to happen.
Take deep breaths and be truthful. She'll appreciate your honesty and it's only a key board. They can be bought anywhere.
I'm on your side !

I agree with basqui, you should have your laptop inspected/cleaned by a professional, or at least someone knowledgeable about laptop hardware, immediately. Was the laptop turned on when the coffee was spilt? If it is you run the danger of short-circuiting some of the electrical connections in the keyboard and underneath it (different laptops have different arrangements of the components inside, some have the hard disk under the keyboard, some the RAM), which may lead to serious malfunction. Also , since it was coffee, even after it has dried the sugars and sticky residue may coat the metal parts of the electric components, which can lead to corrosion, short circuiting, and malfunction as well.
I'm not really a technician but I've tinkered with computers (and laptops) enough to be familiar with some of its workings. Also this has happened to a friend once, luckily he also knew lots about laptops, so what he did was he immediately turned off the laptop, removed the battery, dismantled the keyboard (I watched him do this), cleaned the keys, dismantled the laptop (do not do this if you're unsure how to piece it back together), used some solution (don't know what) to clean the electrical parts, and air-dried everything. His laptop was up and running the next day. Of course, I'm not recommending you do this, best leave this up to people who are used to these things... Good luck!

oh,i'm so sorry to hear this. The bad news is,i'm not a computerman and i know little about the useless keyboard. But i'm wondering whether you can ask someone to repair it.i think it was guarantee to keep good repair. But the point is,it has been used for 5 years?i wish it is still in its warranty time.if it isn't,i think maybe it is a good chance for you to buy a new one.
